Not in Hall of Fame News

As you know, we are slowly (or dare we say methodically?) working on the Top 50 for every major sports team in the big four of North American sports.  The plan after is to then look at how each team celebrates their former players/executives in terms of retired numbers/franchise halls of fame, etc.  This makes it news to us that the Seattle Mariners will retire the #11 of Edgar Martinez. This is no small honor, as the Mariners have been stingy with their retired numbers.  To date, only the league mandate #42 of Jackie Robinson and that of recently elected…
Let’s try something new here. We’ll combine a few news items that we think our noteworthy in the “Hall of Fame” world.  Let’s start with the WWE. In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard, former ECW World Heavyweight Champion was asked if he ever saw himself in the WWE Hall of Fame in the future.  He didn’t exactly imply he wanted in, nor did he have kind words to say about the institution itself: “It’s such a fake Hall of Fame.  I’d only do it because I need the money. I don’t know if I would mother--- everyone or…
Today, the International Tennis Hall of Fame announced their latest members as they revealed their 2017 Class, which will be co-headlined by former world ranked #1 players, Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters. American, Andy Roddick was ranked #1 in 2003.  That year, he would defeat Juan Carlos Ferrero to win the U.S. Open, which would be the biggest win of his career.  Roddick would never win another Grand Slam again, but did appear in four more finals (three Wimbledons and one U.S. Open).  He would win over 600 matches as a single. Like Roddick, Kim Klijsters would reach #1 in…
Regular visitors to Notinhalloffame.com know that we are methodically working on the Top 50 players for every franchise.  The step afterwards will be a look at how each of those organizations honor their past players/executives/coaches in their respective Halls of Fame/Rings of Honor and/or Retired Numbers.  As such, it is of news to us that the Texas Rangers will be retiring the number of former Catcher, and now Hall of Famer, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez.  This announcement follows Rodriguez’ selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Rangers have retired three numbers in the past, the #26 of former Manager, Johnny…
Although he hadn’t played a game in Major League Baseball since 2013, former flamethrower, Josh Johnson has formally announced his retirement from the game of Baseball. Johnson, who is only 32, has already gone three Tommy John surgeries and it became clear that his elbow would not rebound. The now former Pitcher played eight of his nine seasons with the Florida/Miami Marlins, before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.  Johnson’s best seasons were in 2009 and 2010, both of which saw him go to the All Star Game.  In 2010, Johnson would lead the National League in Earned Run…
Barry Bonds made a sizeable increase in Hall of Fame votes. So did Roger Clemens. Edgar Martinez had his highest increase and for the first time since he has been on the ballot looks like he has a real Hall of Fame chance Trevor Hoffman inched closer. Mike Mussina climbed over 50%. Curt Schilling dropped seven percent and dipped below 50%. We know why don’t we?  So does Curt Schilling, who this week on the Dan Patrick show sounded off on his snub: “We all know why.  Because I’m not — I’m not quiet. I think if I didn’t talk,…

We don’t rank the players not in it, but we here at Notinhalloffame.com always have serious respect for the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame.  Today they have announced that Joe Sakic, Saku Koivu, Teemu Selanne, Uwe Krupp, Angela Ruggiero and Dieter Kalt will be the Class of 2017. Representing Canada is Joe Sakic, who entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.  The native of Burnaby, British Columbia is a two time Stanley Cup Champion and a former Hart Trophy winner as a professional but he also has a decorated career representing his nation.   Sakic won a Gold…
This one makes us very happy. It was announced today that the WWE Hall of Fame will be inducting Kurt Angle into this year’s class, where he is likely to be the headliner. A two time NCAA Champion, Angle won the Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Gold Medal at the 1996 Olympic Games.  He would translate that ability and arguable took to the Professional Wrestling game quicker than anyone in the past thirty years.  Angle would debut on WWE Television in 1999 and in a twelve month period would win the WWF European, Intercontinental and World Heavyweight Championship. He would stay with…

RIP: Jimmy Snuka

It is a very sad day for the WWE, as one of their greatest superstars of all-time, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka passed away today.  He was 73 years old Before we get to what has dominated news about Snuka in recent years, let’s take a quick look at his decorated in ring career: Born in Fiji in 1943, Snuka did not wrestling until 1970.  His first taste of true success in the wrestling industry took place in ’73 when he went to work for Don Owen in NWA Pacific Northwest.  He would win that regional championship six times as well as…
