gold star for USAHOF

Not in Hall of Fame News

We have been waiting a long time to hear a comment from this man. In a recent interview in Japan, Rodgers had this to say: “I honestly, honestly don’t get weird about it.  I can’t figure out what the criterion is. It’s actually sort of funny. If it’s not based on statistics then it’s just an opinion poll deciding this person’s cooler than that person.  But if a hall of fame is something that says this person had 20 gold records or influenced this amount of people, I’ve sold more records than almost anyone in there. I’ve written more hit…
We would be lying if we thought that the Pre-Integration Committee was going to select anybody, and well, we weren’t let down. Specifically, this committee was tasked with choosing players/administrators who had their day in the sun prior to 1947, when the color barrier was finally broken. To gain induction, a candidate must finish with at least 12 of the 16 votes (75%) from the committee.  The highest finisher was Doc Adams with 10.  Historically speaking, Adams has been uncovered as one of the father’s of the modern game and many of his innovations are still used today.  Former players,…
With all the talk about the upcoming Hall of Fame vote for the Baseball Hall of Fame, it is easy to forget at the Winter Meetings that will happen on December 6th and the 7th, that the Veteran’s Committee will be meeting to discuss other nominees for Cooperstown. This year the committee in question is the Pre-Integration Era Committee, which reflects players and administrators prior to 1947, the year in which the color line was breached by Jackie Robinson.  Before we get into the candidates they are discussing, it is worth noting a regular criticism that has been made is…
Sometimes I feel like I’m beating a dead horse. Not that long ago when Mark McGwire landed the Hitting Coach job with the St. Louis Cardinals, we thought this might help his Hall of Fame chances as he was back in the MLB fold.  It didn’t, but McGwire isn’t the home run king.  Barry Bonds is.
This is not news that we wanted to wake up to. Last night, former Stone Temple Pilots lead singer, Scott Weiland, was found dead in his tour bus in Minnesota.  He was 48 years old. Weiland, who was on tour with his band, “The Wildabouts”, gained prominence in the early 90’s with Stone Temple Pilots during the tail end of the grunge movement.  The band put out five albums and were known for songs like “Creep”, “Interstate Love Song”, “Plush”, “Big Bang Baby”, “Big Empty” and “Vasoline”.  Disbanding in 2001, Weiland would form Velvet Revolver, which featured three former members…
For our purposes, this is actually big news. To enter the Hockey Hall of Fame you have to receive 14 votes out of 18 from the Hockey Hall of Fame Committee, so when three of them are replaced, it stands to reason that we here at Notinhalloffame.com are interested in knowing who it is. Hall of Fame inductees, Jari Kurri and Ron Francis have been chosen to be a part of the selection committee.  Kurri is currently the General Manager of Jokerit, a Finnish club in the KHL and Francis is the Vice President and the General Manager of the…
While this is not exactly a surprise, a true end of an era will be happening.  37 year old Los Angeles Laker, Shooting Guard, Kobe Bryant has announced on the Player’s Tribune website that this will be his final season in the National Basketball Association. Citing that his body “knows it’s time to say goodbye”, Bryant is entering the end of a two year contract, and it was not necessarily a given that the Lakers would like to resign him, though with the recent news, the official farewell tour can begin. Bryant has nothing left to prove as he has…
Prior to the 103rd Grey Cup on Sunday, The Canadian Football Hall of Fame has announced the CFL Class of 2016. Let’s look at the four players and the one builder who will bring the Canadian Football Hall of Fame class up to 283 members. Derrell “Mookie” Mitchell: Wide Receiver 1997-2007 Mitchell came out of Texas Tech and would be a three time CFL All Star and would catch 160 passes for 2,000 Yards in 2008.  He would win the Grey Cup twice. Rodney Harding:  Defensive Tackle 1985-96 A twelve year veteran out of Oklahoma State, Harding was a two…
Thanksgiving is a time of reuniting the family.  That is what is happening in Green Bay, as Brett Favre is returning tonight but not in a Vikings jersey, but there to have his number four retired by the franchise where he became a star. This is no small honor as while the Packers have the largest Hall of Fame in all of professional sports, this will only be the 6th number retired by the team.  Favre will join Tony Canadeo (#3), Don Hutson (#14), Bart Starr (#15), Ray Nitschke (#66) and Reggie White (#92).  Bart Starr is scheduled to appear…

RIP: Guy Lewis

The problem when you cover Halls of Fame as your core task is that you regularly discuss older people, and conversely cover many deaths.  There is another to discuss today as Basketball Hall of Fame Coach, Guy Lewis passed away at the age of 93. Lewis was known for being the head coach of the Houston Cougars for over thirty years and the famed “Phi Slama Jama”.  Lewis would take Houston to the NCAA Finals in 1983 and 1984, though would not win the big one.  Twice he was named the Coach of the Year and would appear in five…
