The American Hockey League has announced the Hall of Fame Class of 2019, which will be the 14th Class of the 80 year old league. The AHL has largely served as a feeder system to the National Hockey League and is now completely affiliated with the NHL. The new members will be: John Anderson: Anderson spent 17 seasons in the NHL as a player and was a player/coach for the New Haven Nighthawks in 1991/92 where he was a First Team All Star and would win the Fred T. The World Golf Hall of Fame has announced the 15 Finalists in four categories, Male Competitors (4), Female Competitors (5), Lifetime Achievement (3) and Veterans (3). A Sub-Committee of 20 people decided the Finalists, six of which are Hall of Famers. The Finalists are: Male Competitors: Reteif Goosen: From South Africa, Goosen won 33 times on tour and was the 2001 and 2004 U.S. Open winner. He is also a six time Presidents Cup winner. Now that the Baseball regular season is over we know that there will be significant retirements occurring in the next few months but on the last weekend we knew that we saw that end of David Wright’s career. Wright played two games after coming back from serious injury that prematurely ended his 2016 season. We have another significant retirement to discuss as Brian Gionta announced that he is retiring from professional hockey and has taken a job with the Buffalo Sabres as a Developmental Coach. From Rochester, New York, Brian Gionta was drafted 82nd Overall in 1998 but prior to joining the professional ranks he went to play for Boston College where he would help the institution win the National Championship in his senior year. It was announced today that Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Tommy McDonald passed away at the age of 84. There are no details at this time as to the cause of death. A two-time All-American and two time National Champion from the University of Oklahoma, the 5 foot 7 Wide Receiver was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 3rd Round of the 1957 NFL Draft where he played for six seasons. A very significant retirement took place as Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings has announced that he is done playing hockey. Zetterberg has a degenerative back condition that can not be cured by rest or surgery and he opted to end playing so that he increase his quality of life in his later years. Playing his entire NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, Zetterberg was a seventh round pick from Sweden who was not forecasted to have a career as successful as it was.
