Professor LaPlano and the Planotones
From the tribute film to the spirit of Rock and Roll, American Hot Wax, we have “Professor LePlano and the Planotones” who were the resident DooWop Group of the film. The film’s rock stars were half people who played themselves and half made up bands, which may make these fictional entries from the film muddled at best, and long shots for entry.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
American Hot Wax (1978)

Actors:
Kenny Vance
Joe Esposito
Bruce Sudano
Ed Hokenson

Songs you might remember:
Rock and Roll is Here to Stay

Why you should vote for them:
This is from a film that celebrated Rock and Roll.

Why you should not vote for them:
Basically, they pretended they were someone else.

Pop

Pop
Loosely based on Wham, Pop was a very successful band in the 1980’s and when the duo broke up, one of them had a very successful solo career which saw him knighted and the other was asked to perform in “Battle of the 80’s Has-Beens” Hugh Grant was great as the Andrew Ridgley character, Alex Fletcher who has seen better days in his career, but has a chance to redeem himself with by writing a song for Cora (a Britney Spears clone) which would allow him to sing at her concert. It would turn out good for Fletcher, as we learn in a Pop Up Video closing the film that he reunited with his more successful partner and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now if they were inducted to that, shouldn’t they be inducted here?

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Music & Lyrics (2007)

Actors:
Hugh Grant (Alex Fletcher)
Scott Porter (Colin Thompson)

Songs you might remember:
Pop Goes My Heart

Why you should vote for them:
Hey…they are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Why you should not vote for them:
The bands that inspired them are not in the Rock and Roll Hall.

Pootie Tang

Pootie Tang
Written and directed by Louis C.K., Pootie Tang was part farce, part blaxploitation commentary and part comedic genius. It was not well received, but it did gain an audience, and the lead character was shown to be a singer/rapper of sorts within the film. We are not sure whether this is a serious contender for the Hall or not, but again this is one where we glad we don’t have to decide.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show and Movie Appeared:
The Chris Rock Show (1997-2000)
Pootie Tang (2001)

Actor:
Lance Crouther

Songs you might remember:
None

Why you should vote for him:
Even those who hated it acknowledged it was funny.

Why you should not vote for him:
The music was not a focus, actually it was a joke.

The Pinheads

Pinheads The
We don’t really know much about the Pinheads other than that Marty McFly fronted them and played lead guitar. We saw them audition for the Battle of the Bands by playing the Huey Lewis and the News song, “The Power of Love”, though we did not see them for long.   They were told by the judges (one of them being Huey Lewis in a cameo) seconds after debut that they were “too loud”. We are not sure what became of the Pinheads, but we suspect that the lead singer might sound a bit like Chuck Berry.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Back to the Future (1985)

Actors:
Michael J. Fox
Paul Hanson
Lee Brownfield
Robert DeLapp

Songs you might remember:
The Power of Love

Why you should vote for them:
This may not be the most successful fictitious band, but they were in one of the most successful movies of all time.

Why you should not vote for them:
We did not even get thirty seconds of the Pinheads.
