251. Culture Club

A lot of Rock and Roll is image and there are examples upon examples where a carefully constructed image is what gets you noticed. Sometimes though the image you created to get you noticed is what may hold you back in the long run. On some level, Culture Club may fit this example.

To the listeners who enjoyed the unusual androgynous appearance of Culture Club’s lead singer, Boy George, they received a wonderful mix of Blue Eyed Soul, New Wave and Pop that was wrapped up in a radio friendly (and more importantly for that era, MTV) package. At a time when other British artists of similar genres were not appealing to American audiences, Culture Club did and as such had a much more international appeal than many others did at the time. Drug addiction and changing tastes eventually did in Culture Club (as it does no many others), but their legacy could live on with a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame….should they be able to envision Boy George there.
