Do you know what we look forward to? When boxing ceases to be relevant and when Manny Pacquiao retires, that will likely be the case. No, it isn’t because we have a soapbox and are anti-violence; our issue is with the corrupt nature of boxing and how championships are borderline worthless. A generation from now, kids will grow up and try and figure out why Muhammad Ali was famous for a sport that nobody watches. However, this is a diatribe for another column. Right now, our issue is with boxing’s last hope, Manny Pacquiao covering Dan Hill’s insipid ballad, “Sometimes When We Touch”.
Okay, even though Dan Hill’s version is often listed on “worst” lists, at least he sounds earnest when he sings it, and as far as ballads go, there are far worse. With that said, why does the top pound for pound boxer need to cover this? Because he can you say? Maybe, but Manny is a Filipino and they will sing for ANY reason; regardless of whether they should. This is a race of people that have never seen a karaoke bar they couldn’t walk past. Pacquiao can certainly kick anyone’s ass, but does he have to sing like an ass? How does this help generate positive attention to a dying sport?
Oh by the way, please do not direct Mr. Pacquiao here….sincerely, notinhalloffame.com.
