U Can’t Touch This
Highest Billboard Position:
#8 in 1990

The perpetual riff comes from Rick James’ Superfreak, which amazingly James had to sue to get royalties for.  Of course, James likely spent the whole settlement on crack, although if you heard MC Hammer butcher up your signature song and try to deny doing it, wouldn’t you turn to drugs too?

Before Hammer became a “Where are They Now?” he was actually the biggest rap star on the planet.  The man with the overly baggy pants was very flashy, but when compared to the next wave of rappers who emerged he quickly became a joke.  The song (like Hammer himself) aged poorly and rapidly, and what was viewed simply as fun, was now seen as self-aggrandizing and clueless.  The revisionists on U Can’t Touch This are right….Can’t Touch This; can’t even find it at the bargain bin.
