Not in Hall of Fame News

Sidney Crosby...... Over and Out?

NHL training camps are in full swing, and Pittsburgh Penguins superstar, Sidney Crosby is not among the participants. He has yet to fully recover from the concussion suffered at last year's Winter Classic. We have seen what concussions have done to athletes in various sports, and it is possible that Crosby will never be the same again. Hypothetically, if Crosby is finished, is he a Hall of Famer? He has already won everything worth winning, capturing the Hart Trophy, the Stanley Cup and the Olympic Gold Medal. Let's say he comes bacl and is just an average player for the…

The 200th win of Tim Wakefield

Tim Wakefield won't make the Baseball Hall of Fame, but we here at want to congratulate the knuckleballer on his 200th career win in Major League Baseball. Wakefield accomplished this feat at the age of 45, and there is a good chance that this is his last season. He didn't really cement himself until the age of 28 when he joined the Red Sox where he has spent the last seventeen seasons. He was only an All Star once, but it may surprise you to know that the answer to the active pitcher with the most career wins is......Tim…

The KHL Disaster

I really didn't want to write about this at first. The disaster in Russia that eliminated an entire team (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl) in the Kontinental Hockey League is the worst tragedy in hockey history; in an off season that already was full of dismal news. For those unfamiliar with the KHL, the Russian based Association (with teams in Belarus, Latvia, Slovakia & Kazakhstan) is considered the highest quality European League. It has multiple former National Hockey League Players, and elite Europeans of NHL calibre. I am not a regular follower of the KHL, and when first learned of the crash was…

RIP Lee Roy Selmon

Our apologies for being late in recognizing the passing of one of the great Defensive Ends of all time, Lee Roy Selmon. The Hall of Famer was the bright spot in bad Tampa Bay Buccaneer teams, and was the first man honored by the franchise. He will be missed.

Fred Taylor Retires

11, 695 Career Rushing Yards is an exceptional total and this will put Fred Taylor at number 15 All Time in that category. Sounds impressive right? It is, but does that make him a Hall of Famer? We may have the Fred McGriff of the NFL, where as Fred Taylor racked up solid stats, so did a pile of other Running Backs. Taylor did the bulk of pro career in Jacksonville, which is hardly the mecca for Professional Football. Only one time did Taylor make a Pro Bowl, which again speaks to the elite group of Running Backs who he…
Have to admit; we forgot about Chipper Jones this year. He just belted his 450th Home Run, but it remains to be seen if he can get that magical 500 number. If he wraps up his career soon, did he do enough for Cooperstown?

RIP: Mike Flanagan

Today we lost former Cy Young Award winner, Mike Flanagan who passed away at the age of 59. Flanagan won the American League Cy Young in 1979 and finished his career with 167 career wins. He may have never been a serious threat for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, but he is a member of the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame. Flanagan was only 59 years old.
The Football Hall of Fame announced their two Senior Candidates today. Jack Butler and Dick Stanfel were selected, and one of them will enter Canton. Butler is on the outside of our top 100 and Stanfel is ranked at #54 and as much as we would like to congratulate both of them, we are feeling terrible for Jerry Kramer who was passed over again. Needless to say, we are not pleased with that.
.....which makes us think. Even though she is undeniably Pop, does this type of unprecedented success help her become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in the future? Major Pop success has been a ticket to the Hall in the past.

Congratulations to Jim Thome

Congratulations to Jim Thome for hitting his 600th career Home Run today. Thome has reached this milestone relatively quietly and by all accounts without controversy. It is a shame that he has not received more publicity for this achievement.
