The Monkees are possibly the most unique pop culture phenomenon of all time. They were actors hired to play a band. The success of the music blurred that line to non-existenc e. They rebelled against their label, culminating in demands to have more control over their music. That is something NONE of the allegedly cool countercultu re bands of the day had the guts to do. The result was their two best albums, full of life and experimentat ion. They were the first act to feature choreographe d light shows and multimedia into their concerts. First use of the Moog synthesizer in rock (played by Dolenz on Nesmith's brilliant "Daily Nightly.") They had the respect of the Beatles, the Stones, Buffalo Springfield (who included them in the dedications of one of their albums), and many of the folkies - who knew both Tork and Nesmith before the Monkees. They were admired by counter-cult ure heroes, including Timothy Leary who dedicated an entire chapter in one of his books to them.

Quoting Stephen Troup:
Yeah, after all, the Monkees were a major influence on the Beatles! (Total sarcasm)
Get these guys off this list!

so (the way I read your comment) is that any band that had NO influence (on the Beatles) should NOT be allowed ... so WE should get rid of Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, the Kinks, (Sir) Elton John, ZZ Top, the Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, the Police, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Tom Petty, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Curtis Mayfield, Blondie, Cream, Dire Straits AND the list just keeps going on and on and on .... TO SAY that only bands that had an influence on the Beatles (mostly Do-Wop ... there's nothing wrong with that genre, I STILL listen to that sound) But, to say that only bands that had an influence on the Beatles and to snub everything else that came after 1962 is just LUDICROUS and it shows you know nothing about music.

elect a pedophile (okay !!! ALLEGED pedophile) not once, but twice ... elect a murderer (Sid/Nancy) ... but keep a band that had a heavy influence on the late 60's and early 70's out ... sounds personal to me

The reason The Monkees are not in the HOF is because Jan Wenner doesn't want them in. He donates a huge amount of money to the HOF and will not allow them in. Pretty simple. And yes, he is an asshole. Fuck you Jan Wenner.
