gold star for USAHOF

Mark O'Meara to the World Golf HOF

We announced some time ago that we would not be doing a list for the World Golf Hall of Fame as their induction process was too lax for our liking.  Since that time, the Golf Hall announced that they would be revising their process, and today they announced their first induction class under the new system.

This year’s headliner is Mark O’Meara, a 16 time winner on the PGA Tour.  O’Meara won two Majors, the 1998 British Open and 1998 Masters, the year he was named the 1998 PGA Player of the Year.  In total, he won 34 tournaments as a professional.

Former LPGA star, Laura Davies will also be inducted.  Davies totaled 84 victories in her career, 20 of which were on the LPGA tour.  The Englishwoman won four majors and was actually two points shy of induction to the World Golf Hall of Fame under the previous system.

From Australia, 8 Time winner on the PGA Tour, David Graham also will be inducted.  Graham captured two Majors in his career, the PGA Championship in 1978 and the U.S. Open in 1981.

Noted architect, A.W. Tillinghast will also be included.  He designed Bethpage Black, Baltusrol and Winged Foot and many others that have been used in countless PGA events.  Tillinghast, one of the most respected designers of Golf’s “Golden Age” died in 1942.

The changes made by the Hall of Fame to their induction process included holding a ceremony on a biennial basis, a 16 person election committee that now needs to have 75 percent approval, and only categories to receive possible induction: Male, Female, Veteran’s and Lifetime Achievement.

We would like to congratulate the newest members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, and the Hall itself for recognizing the need to change.
