Joe Nathan was one of the more successful closers in the American League throughout the 2000’s a role he embraced after four undistinguished years for the San Francisco Giants.

In his first season in Minnesota (2004) Nathan was anointed as the teams closer and he quickly embraced the new role as he recorded 44 Saves with a 1.62 ERA and a 0.982 WHIP.  In terms of Cy Young voting (he finished fourth) this was his best season, but in 2006 (where he finished fifth) he went 7 and 0 with an ERA and WHIP of 1.58 and 0.790 respectively.  Nathan was a six time All Star (four with Minnesota and two with Texas) and from 2004 to 2014 he went 9 for 10 in those years in accruing 35 Saves.  As of this writing he is eighth all-time in Saves.
