231. The Roots

If you only know The Roots from their role as the house band on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show, than you really don’t understand just how important this group is.

Unlike most Rap and Hip-Hop groups, The Roots were a self-contained band full of talented musicians who did not rely on sampling.  This is not a dig on more traditional rappers, but this does negate the argument that some would have against the Roots.  Overall, we are talking about a group that while they rap, could be described equally as a Jazz or a Soul band and have one of the more diverse musical catalogue of anyone on this list.  While that certainly puts them on the positive side of the ledger it can not be dismissed that the critically acclaimed band never had a major or signature hit.  That hasn’t stopped other bands from getting inducted but it could here.

Should The Roots be in the Hall of Fame?

Definitely put them in! - 53.3%

Probably not, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. - 6.7%
