When you fly the flag of the Blues, many Rock and Roll pundits tend to take notice. For various reasons, Robert Cray was noticed by the critics and Blues followers, but he never seemed to gain the respect like those who came before him.

One of the few successful Bluesmen in the 80’s (and beyond), Robert Cray was sometimes the victim of disrespect. It came from the strong accessibility of his music, and while it had Poppish overtones and lacked some of the grittiness of the Blues artists who came before him but he was just as soulful as his influences were. Cray’s detractors may forget that he had the blessing and respect from the very legends they compared him to, and next to Stevie Ray Vaughan, has to be considered among the leaders of the Blues Revival movement.
