Rock and Roll (588)

Music.  It has the ability to bring people together.  It can stir up hidden emotions.  It can cause you to get up and physically move.  It can help you through your work day.  It separates generations.  We could describe it for page after page in terms both specific and vague but music simply means different things to different people.  Likely, many of these things were on the mind of the builders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to those who built up the genre of Rock and Roll.

Their intentions certainly seemed clear enough.  Their website states that “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture”.  For our purposes, we are going to focus on the performer section of the Hall.  That being said, the first rule of eligibility is very simple.  Once an artist has gone twenty five years after the release of their first record, they become eligible.  After that it becomes a little murky.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that “criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Influence and significance is certainly open to interpretation.  For that matter, so is Rock and Roll.  When Bill Haley sang Rock around the Clock over sixty years ago was he describing a sound, a look or maybe just an attitude?  Did the songwriters just like the word “rock”?  The origin of Rock music is so difficult to pinpoint its subsequent evolution is just as equally hard to chart.

With these vague parameters we at Not in Hall of Fame put our own committee together and came up with the top 250 artists whom we feel deserve consideration for enshrinement in Cleveland.  Are we right?  Are we wrong?   We know two things for sure; the first is that while compiling this list we felt we could make a viable case for multiple artists to be in our number one slot, the second was that it was a blast coming up with it.  Let us know what you think and based on who gets inducted, who becomes newly eligible, your opinions and how our own perceptions change, we will see how we rank them in the following year.

Until then, Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!

Sincerely,

The Not in Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Committee.

There should be little doubt that Steve Winwood has earned his place in the Hall for his work in Traffic. What has been in doubt is whether he deserves induction a second time for either his work with other bands or as a solo artist. Although Winwood achieved a lot of success during the 80’s for his solo work, it…
In the entry regarding the Spinners, a mention was made about the lack of Philly Soul groups in the Hall. The Spinners might get in one day representing the genre, but if they don’t it would not be an impossibility to see the Stylistics take that spot instead.
It is inarguable that the Blues are one of the most important genres in modern music. It has been a huge part of developing Rock and Roll, and the amount of artists who have looked to interpret the Blues and make it their own are uncountable. Most are unsuccessful at putting any kind of unique spin on it; Canned Heat…
An accomplished musician who blended styles that complimented his Blue Eyed Soul vocal skills , Robert Palmer became a massive star by conquering MTV “backed” by an air band of models. At the time it drew attention to Palmer but as popular as his music became it lacked the substance of his earlier work. If the Hall looks at his…
Although we think we can make an overall case for the induction of Glenn Danzig’s overall career, we aren’t going to make travel arrangements for him to Ohio just yet.
In terms of commercial success, Boyz II Men are the most successful R&B group of all-time, and based on what they drew from, it was easy to see why.  Coming from Philadelphia, the quartet took that soul sound, infused a bit of Detroit, but more importantly built on the New Jack Swing movement that was already popular.  The group used…
From San Francisco the Quicksilver Messenger Service did not have hit albums or really even a hit to speak of, but they did have a reputation for having an excellent live act and were one of the first “Jam” bands of note. The latter could make them a potential entrant as the style that they helped to popularize was a…
Although we have Cher as a solo act is ranked significantly higher, she may have a better shot as one half of Sonny & Cher. Though often forgotten, the duo were huge stars in the 60’s and despite being left for dead by the decade’s end, they managed to resurrect their career and launch a million variety show knock offs…
More often than not, music inspires people to get out of their chairs and dance. With Bauhaus, it may have inspired people to sit down and mope in the basement.
Collected from a group of respected studio musicians, Toto had a great run in the late 70’s and early 80’s with a string of Soft Rock hits that may not be held in the highest regard today but was very well produced and expertly played. Their musicianship is not in question, but without any perceived substance it won’t just be…
Oh boy. We talk about a lot of bands being polarizing, but Nickelback just takes it to a very strange level. The people who hate the Canadian band are numerous and they are about as critically despised as it gets. Yet they sell millions of records and fill arenas through a passionate fan base. Somewhere in between is where we could categorize them.
Their have been many artists mentioned on this list flying the Progressive Rock banner on this list who appear to have little chance to be induction. Kansas is one of those groups, though when we hear from some people that they were not exactly a Progressive Rock band we don’t entirely disagree.
With Steve Winwood already in with Traffic, his best shot for a second induction may lie with the Spencer Davis Group which was where he gained his first exposure. The Spencer Davis Group was a brief but powerful act that was one of the best British based Blues Rock band ever. The question for induction is not whether they had…
Nowadays, the Pop Culture reference to “Arrested Development” refers to the acclaimed Jason Bateman TV series.  A decade ago, that reference was to the Atlanta based Hip Hop group that seemed poised to be the next big thing.  Arrested Development did not reach the heights that was prognosticated for them, but their debut album remains one of the best ever…
Rock and Roll history is full of one hit wonders and if you look in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you may find one or two. One hit wonders are often laughed at, but perhaps it is much worse to be perceived as a one hit wonder than to actually be one. The Clovers may very well fall…
Whether it was with the Fairport Convention, his wife Linda or on his own, Richard Thompson has been credited with the creation of some of the most beautiful Folk music to come out of Britain. His career once he left Fairport, while not as significant, may have been more critically revered. Thompson is rightfully a legend in Britain, but without…
Antony and the Johnsons are well acclaimed band that is really Antony Hegarty (and whomever he may be collaborating with at the time). Part Baroque, part Chamber and very much drag influenced, they certainly have a uniqueness factor and have actually done well in the United Kingdom (where Hegarty was born). However, you know the deal….unless you conquer the States,…
With songs that are catchy and fun, They Might Be Giants made a career out of signing carefree songs about seemingly the most random topics. With a quirky sense of humor, the Boston based band grew a sizable following from fans that made them one of the more popular Alternative bands in the pre-Grunge era. With the Grunge movement in…
Although he wrote countless songs over multiple decades, Kenny Loggins may be best known for seemingly writing every single soundtrack song in the 1980’s. It seemed like that was his best niche as he never seemed to nail a complete album but with a lot of scattered hits and his work in previous acts, he could net a look form…
Just where do you rank a band that went against every traditional Rock platform, whether it was in the mainstream or underground? Where do you place a band that had no real hits, but an incalculable influence? We are not sure ourselves.
