Rock and Roll (600)

Music.  It has the ability to bring people together.  It can stir up hidden emotions.  It can cause you to get up and physically move.  It can help you through your work day.  It separates generations.  We could describe it for page after page in terms both specific and vague but music simply means different things to different people.  Likely, many of these things were on the mind of the builders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to those who built up the genre of Rock and Roll.

Their intentions certainly seemed clear enough.  Their website states that “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture”.  For our purposes, we are going to focus on the performer section of the Hall.  That being said, the first rule of eligibility is very simple.  Once an artist has gone twenty five years after the release of their first record, they become eligible.  After that it becomes a little murky.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that “criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Influence and significance is certainly open to interpretation.  For that matter, so is Rock and Roll.  When Bill Haley sang Rock around the Clock over sixty years ago was he describing a sound, a look or maybe just an attitude?  Did the songwriters just like the word “rock”?  The origin of Rock music is so difficult to pinpoint its subsequent evolution is just as equally hard to chart.

With these vague parameters we at Not in Hall of Fame put our own committee together and came up with the top 250 artists whom we feel deserve consideration for enshrinement in Cleveland.  Are we right?  Are we wrong?   We know two things for sure; the first is that while compiling this list we felt we could make a viable case for multiple artists to be in our number one slot, the second was that it was a blast coming up with it.  Let us know what you think and based on who gets inducted, who becomes newly eligible, your opinions and how our own perceptions change, we will see how we rank them in the following year.

Until then, Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!

Sincerely,

The Not in Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Committee.

If you would have asked people in the 1980s when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was first formed, people would have laughed in your face if you suggested that "Weird" Al Yankovic would be a Hall of Fame possibility.  After all, Yankovic was a song parody writer, and most of his songs were about food.  Yet, year after…
She was already pegged as a future legend before she turned twenty, but the lofty expectations were not something that Fiona Apple could possibly meet. Regardless of that fact, Apple became a cult figure with only five full length albums over the past twenty-five years, though due to her personal issues is actually remarkable. Had Fiona Apple became half of…
When we look at out list we see many artists who had a broad appeal that they could have came from any English speaking country. This is certainly not the case for the Sir Douglas Quintet as a listen of their music and the time period of which it came from, really could it have come from any place other…
Redefining popular music from Sweden, The Hives quarterbacked the Garage Rock sound in the new millennium and became one of the ‘it’ bands. Stylistically brilliant, powerful to the ears and the type of Rock that makes people take notice could be a formula to Cleveland but there is still a bit of work to do for the Hives to separate…
If you check through the list of critics top tens in the late 70’s and early 80’s you will find it littered with Punk bands. Despite the Misfits being one of the more popular Punk bands in history, critical love and the Misfits were not hand in hand.
With the combination of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio the British Heavy Metal band Rainbow helped perpetuate the Metal genre in the 1970’s. Their blend of medieval imagery with a classical composition generated them a solid fan base. Though their later efforts were substantially weaker, their 70’s work was considered some of the better Metal of the 70’s. Having…
Often when a band breaks up, a breakthrough star will emerge leaving the others in his/her wake. In the case of the Wailers, Bob Marley was the artist that broke through leaving the others far behind. Had Marley not broke through to the stratosphere, could it have been possible that the solo career of Peter Tosh may have gotten more…
While many white artists were blurring the racial line across many musical genres, the traditional platform of Rock and Roll seemed to be a “whites only” club; at least that was the perception among many in the late 80’s. Virtually anyone who thought that had their opinion change when they saw Living Colour perform epically on Saturday Night Live; which…
It could be argued that after Grunge ran its course that the band Garbage was able to meld more styles together than anyone else without sounding like that is what they were doing.  This really shouldn’t be a surprise considering that three of the members are accomplished producers.  The triumvirate found the perfect lead singer with the Scottish siren, Shirley…
The more we thought about it, the more we became amazed as to just how much musical influence was coming out of Germany in the late 60’s and 70’s. One of those bands was the Berlin based group; Tangerine Dream was no exception as their musical contributions is felt very much in multiple genres.
We did not have an internal debate as to whether Johnny Ace should be inducted. We agreed that he should but as the bulk of his work predated the Rock and Roll explosion we are not sure if he is a Roots and Influences candidate instead.
Much of the work of the Dead Kennedys showed off the best that Punk music had to offer. With the political anger of British Punk stars and the fiery rapid approach of American Punk performers, the Dead Kennedys may not have broken down that many doors in the Punk Rock genre but among the Punk bands of the early 80’s,…
Anyone taking a look throughout this list will see the vast amount of artists from the United Kingdom. Primal Scream is another such artist, but if anyone seemed to represent the last twenty years of British music better than they did, we would like to know who that might be.
Obviously, the acts on this list had the bulk of their essential recording decades ago. Some of those songs sound as fresh today as they did then. Iron Butterfly however may not be one of those bands.
With a resume of over forty five top one hundred Billboard hits; you would think that Brook Benton would have been the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by now. The truth is, Benton has yet to even receive a nomination as of yet and be the first to show exceptional success yet befuddle the Hall as to whether he…
Often the word “Psychedelic” is used when describing influences and styles in Rock and Roll music. One of the bands who helped to popularize the Psychedelic style of the music, the 13th Floor Elevators is usually forgotten in the conversation; though not by the bands that they influenced.
When thinking of the great acts from Motown, the general focus is on the vocal talents they produced. The lone exception would have to be Junior Walker & the All Stars; a self contained Motown band that had the raunchiness and grooves that the other polished Motown artists did not have.
Not exactly the type of music that you may expect to come out of Oklahoma, the Flaming Lips became critical darlings with their brand of Alternative Pop. With music as weird as it is beautiful and with a fearless attitude towards their music making, it shouldn’t be a surprise if this band climbs the ranking in our future lists as…
Is it wrong for us to see this band get inducted just to see what kind of letter John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) would write to the Hall next? Seriously, when our little committee got together that topic was all we could talk about for an hour. With that said, though Public Image Ltd., will never approach the legacy of Lydon’s…
Known on his birth certificate as Richard James, Aphex Twin had received the high praise of being called one of the most influential and innovative figures in contemporary Electronic music.  The high acclaim was earned as Aphex Twin pushed the envelope of Acid and Ambience and took the Electronic genre to places never before thought.  The question (as with many…
