Rock and Roll (588)

Music.  It has the ability to bring people together.  It can stir up hidden emotions.  It can cause you to get up and physically move.  It can help you through your work day.  It separates generations.  We could describe it for page after page in terms both specific and vague but music simply means different things to different people.  Likely, many of these things were on the mind of the builders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to those who built up the genre of Rock and Roll.

Their intentions certainly seemed clear enough.  Their website states that “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture”.  For our purposes, we are going to focus on the performer section of the Hall.  That being said, the first rule of eligibility is very simple.  Once an artist has gone twenty five years after the release of their first record, they become eligible.  After that it becomes a little murky.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that “criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Influence and significance is certainly open to interpretation.  For that matter, so is Rock and Roll.  When Bill Haley sang Rock around the Clock over sixty years ago was he describing a sound, a look or maybe just an attitude?  Did the songwriters just like the word “rock”?  The origin of Rock music is so difficult to pinpoint its subsequent evolution is just as equally hard to chart.

With these vague parameters we at Not in Hall of Fame put our own committee together and came up with the top 250 artists whom we feel deserve consideration for enshrinement in Cleveland.  Are we right?  Are we wrong?   We know two things for sure; the first is that while compiling this list we felt we could make a viable case for multiple artists to be in our number one slot, the second was that it was a blast coming up with it.  Let us know what you think and based on who gets inducted, who becomes newly eligible, your opinions and how our own perceptions change, we will see how we rank them in the following year.

Until then, Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!

Sincerely,

The Not in Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Committee.

Possibly the apex of the Lo-Fi sound, Neutral Milk Hotel released two albums that anyone who wants to understand that sound should listen to. Of course, that is the problem isn’t it? The music critics raved about their albums, but there were only two of them, and they may have been the only people who bought them. History is already…
While the world of Hip Hop was going into Hardcore and Gangsta directions, De La Soul came out of Long Island and set up camp as Rap’s resident hippies. They may very well have been at the dawn of Alternative Rap, as their quirky rhymes and Jazz and Psychedelic infusions made them very different from what was being showcased in…
It always seemed like Ween was deliberately odd and thrived in producing material that had an Andy Kaufamnesque quality to it.  Their ironic songs gained them fans who reveled in the joking atmosphere and the seemingly self contained world that Ween created.  They never really got past the Underground scene but it is doubtful that they wanted to try to…
If you would have asked people in the 1980s when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was first formed, people would have laughed in your face if you suggested that "Weird" Al Yankovic would be a Hall of Fame possibility.  After all, Yankovic was a song parody writer, and most of his songs were about food.  Yet, year after…
Known on his birth certificate as Richard James, Aphex Twin had received the high praise of being called one of the most influential and innovative figures in contemporary Electronic music.  The high acclaim was earned as Aphex Twin pushed the envelope of Acid and Ambience and took the Electronic genre to places never before thought.  The question (as with many…
Older baseball fans may remember the 1976 season of the Detroit Tiger’s phenomenon, Mark “The Bird” Fidrych whose rookie campaign was laced with instant superstardom and a promise of a legendary career. This didn’t happen, as Fidrych was essentially done after that year and never came close to that and fans waited for a “Second Coming” that would never arrive.…
When we look at out list we see many artists who had a broad appeal that they could have came from any English speaking country. This is certainly not the case for the Sir Douglas Quintet as a listen of their music and the time period of which it came from, really could it have come from any place other…
Although Fugazi is easily one of the most important Post Hardcore bands of note, they rarely promoted themselves. They were true DIY artists who were uncompromising with their craft regardless of whether they were in the studio, on stage, or in life in general. Their lyrics were cerebral and their music was a unique Punk sound with Funk and Reggae…
Obviously, the acts on this list had the bulk of their essential recording decades ago. Some of those songs sound as fresh today as they did then. Iron Butterfly however may not be one of those bands.
Solo careers of the artists of massively successful bands seem to go either way. As successful as John Lennon was, it could be argued that solo efforts of Roger Daltrey is looking to escape a garage sale near you. The first glance may put Robert Plant somewhere in between.
With the combination of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio the British Heavy Metal band Rainbow helped perpetuate the Metal genre in the 1970’s. Their blend of medieval imagery with a classical composition generated them a solid fan base. Though their later efforts were substantially weaker, their 70’s work was considered some of the better Metal of the 70’s. Having…
It took a long time for Kid Rock’s Beastie Boy inspired Rap Metal to make him a star but when he did he never looked back.  Future efforts from the Michigan based white trash superstar showcased a lot more range than would have been originally suspected.  Kid Rock would show that he could use Country and Classic Rock influences and…
It is very common in pop culture for entertainers to become more popular in death. In the case of Nick Drake, he has elevated to cult status which is many levels higher than the anonymity he had when he was alive.
Often the word “Psychedelic” is used when describing influences and styles in Rock and Roll music. One of the bands who helped to popularize the Psychedelic style of the music, the 13th Floor Elevators is usually forgotten in the conversation; though not by the bands that they influenced.
If you were to take a guess as to who was the first Motown act to score a #1 hit, few would guess the Marvelettes. It is hard to see why this would be the case as this was a girl group that had many hits in the early days of Rock. It also easy to see why they might…
Pigeonholing Teenage Fanclub as a band that just simply ushered in the Power Pop revival seems easy to do.  Of course it was just a fraction of what this band was about as their infectious brand of Alternative music was drawing from multiple influences.  Throughout their career, Teenage Fanclub was beloved by the critics, but their appeal never seemed to…
A straight up Bluesy Rock band in a time when that was not in vogue, the Black Crowes echoes the Classic Rock bands of the past and were a breath of fresh air to those tired of the made up Hair metal acts who were about to be phased out.   Chris Robinson and company definitely had a retro feel to…
One of the biggest darlings of the world of Indie Rock in the last twenty years, Death Cab for Cutie slowly built up a massive audience with a soft and bittersweet style that played with the emotional heart strings of their listeners. Coincidently, the love that they received from the Indie fans was completely rejected by another segment of the…
Redefining popular music from Sweden, The Hives quarterbacked the Garage Rock sound in the new millennium and became one of the ‘it’ bands. Stylistically brilliant, powerful to the ears and the type of Rock that makes people take notice could be a formula to Cleveland but there is still a bit of work to do for the Hives to separate…
As we look over our list we are a little overwhelmed with the amount of bands that flew the Punk label. Of course when looking at the Stranglers we are not sure what genre they were officially labeled as they seem to effortlessly shift between many musical styles.
