Rock and Roll (600)

Music.  It has the ability to bring people together.  It can stir up hidden emotions.  It can cause you to get up and physically move.  It can help you through your work day.  It separates generations.  We could describe it for page after page in terms both specific and vague but music simply means different things to different people.  Likely, many of these things were on the mind of the builders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to those who built up the genre of Rock and Roll.

Their intentions certainly seemed clear enough.  Their website states that “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture”.  For our purposes, we are going to focus on the performer section of the Hall.  That being said, the first rule of eligibility is very simple.  Once an artist has gone twenty five years after the release of their first record, they become eligible.  After that it becomes a little murky.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that “criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Influence and significance is certainly open to interpretation.  For that matter, so is Rock and Roll.  When Bill Haley sang Rock around the Clock over sixty years ago was he describing a sound, a look or maybe just an attitude?  Did the songwriters just like the word “rock”?  The origin of Rock music is so difficult to pinpoint its subsequent evolution is just as equally hard to chart.

With these vague parameters we at Not in Hall of Fame put our own committee together and came up with the top 250 artists whom we feel deserve consideration for enshrinement in Cleveland.  Are we right?  Are we wrong?   We know two things for sure; the first is that while compiling this list we felt we could make a viable case for multiple artists to be in our number one slot, the second was that it was a blast coming up with it.  Let us know what you think and based on who gets inducted, who becomes newly eligible, your opinions and how our own perceptions change, we will see how we rank them in the following year.

Until then, Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!

Sincerely,

The Not in Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Committee.

Although Eric B. & Rakim were far from the first Rap stars of note, they may have done more to further the genre of Hip Hop than anyone else on the latter half of the 1980’s. With unequalled chemistry, the duo comprised of Eric B.’s solid DJ skills and the leading MC of his time, Rakim. This was the Hip…
With U2 already in the Rock and Roll Hall, it can be easily said that Ireland is already represented. Yet, when listening to the entire body of U2’s work, does it really scream “Irish”? Nationalism aside, there may not be a band that sounds more like they are from Ireland than the Pogues; which is a little ironic considering that…
Even though it is a building that we have spent a lot of our time focusing on, we admit that we sometimes forget about the sidemen wing of the Hall. Having said that, we looked at the career of Ry Cooder, who we feel may have a Hall of Fame worthy career; though in which wing he belongs to throws…
If you take one look at the Siouxsie & the Banshees the quick reaction is to view them as a Goth Band. Looks are certainly deceiving in this case, and though that does describe their look and a component of their music that is hardly all that they were.
As this list (and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame) finds itself with a large amount of Singer/Songwriters, it is sometimes tempting just to say that this was the only genre that we are looking to represent. With Tim Buckley, just calling him a Singer/Songwriter seems so empty.
The next selection is a band synonymous with early 60’s surf music.  Jan & Dean was certainly a key part of that scene, though they always seemed to be in the shadow of the Beach Boys.
There have been many bands that were known for their experimentalism, but we are hard pressed to find a band that used more non Rock genres to create music that found its way into the Rock canon.  In a decade that celebrated independent music, Stereolab may have had the most “independent” sound of all.  Like much of the Krautrock sound…
The early 90’s brought a lot of attention to the Pacific Northwest music scene, and there were many who thought it came out of nowhere. The reality was that Alternative music in its various forms was alive and well and if anyone was the early champion of the state of Washington it might very well be the Sonics.
With a string of straight forward Rock albums in the 80’s Bryan Adams felt like a breath of fresh air to many disillusioned music listeners who struggled to identify with the New Wave sounds or Heavy Metal that seemed to split the music world. Adams was a safe option and maybe that would become a problem for Adams later. As…
With a huge body of work of Pop songs that scream of female empowerment, Pink may have actually been at her best when she was not as manufactured and embraced her R&B beginnings or forayed into Rock styles. With a lot more work left in her, she is on the outside track for a Hall slot but a lot will…
Without a lot of radio airplay or really support of any kind, My Morning Jacket became one of the great stars of the American music scene. With a mixture of Folk, Rock and other Roots based American musical styles; the group easily became one of the most genuine acts in the business and the indirect masters of the Neo Psychedelic…
Many Singer/Songwriter types don’t have that Rock and Roll type of voice but that was not the case for Jeff Buckley as his voice was full of grit, soul and was a throwback to the classic rock era of the late 60’s and early 70’s.  Maybe, it was this aspect that helped him appeal so strongly to the Adult Alternative set…
Not that ever could be another Kate Bush, but it could be argued that Tori Amos may have been the closest to achieve that.  As a successful Singer/Songwriter with a 90’s Alternative flair, Amos had a broad appeal and quickly became a darling of the critics.  As of this writing, Tori is still building a legacy and could strengthen her…
We wonder if an artist associated with a bubblegum type of musical career has a shot at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Should one get in, we might bet on Neil Sedaka; whose career was actually quite extensive despite what many think.
Now that Dr. Dre (approrpriately) got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of N.W.A., the question we ask now is whether he should get in as a solo act.  Already making a more than strong case as a producer, Dr. Dre’s solo efforts and collaborations are amongst the most respected in the Hip-Hop world.  A…
The 1970’s may have been full of Singer/Songwriters but the decade that followed saw that genre dry up quickly. That made the success of Tracy Chapman that much more unlikely. She didn’t exactly have MTV good looks; she sang in a style against her racial stereotype and was not even attempting to be “cool”. Despite all of that, Chapman had…
Considered an icon in his native Canada, Gordon Lightfoot was a Singer/Songwriter known for his baritone voice and his run of hits. Amongst the Singer/Songwriters who achieved fame in the 70’s, Lightfoot was stripped down even for that genre. At his best when armed with only an acoustic guitar, Lightfoot may have been the best storyteller of his genre, and…
Yes, he is eligible this soon! Lil’ Wayne survived from a place that musical stars don’t usually come from; a pre-teen novelty act. That was how he was first seen in the public eye which was as a tween Hardcore Rapper, but regardless of the ability, it still had a novelty feel to it. Wayne did not fade away, and…
It is virtually impossible to claim that the Woodstock concert was not the most important concert in the history of Rock and Roll. Many of those iconic artists have found their way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, yet despite the acclaimed (yet somewhat forgotten) set that Ten Years After put on, they seem far away from the…
Although they are virtually unknown outside their native Canada, it can be easily argued that the Tragically Hip were the definition of Canadian music.
