Rock and Roll (600)

Music.  It has the ability to bring people together.  It can stir up hidden emotions.  It can cause you to get up and physically move.  It can help you through your work day.  It separates generations.  We could describe it for page after page in terms both specific and vague but music simply means different things to different people.  Likely, many of these things were on the mind of the builders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to those who built up the genre of Rock and Roll.

Their intentions certainly seemed clear enough.  Their website states that “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture”.  For our purposes, we are going to focus on the performer section of the Hall.  That being said, the first rule of eligibility is very simple.  Once an artist has gone twenty five years after the release of their first record, they become eligible.  After that it becomes a little murky.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that “criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Influence and significance is certainly open to interpretation.  For that matter, so is Rock and Roll.  When Bill Haley sang Rock around the Clock over sixty years ago was he describing a sound, a look or maybe just an attitude?  Did the songwriters just like the word “rock”?  The origin of Rock music is so difficult to pinpoint its subsequent evolution is just as equally hard to chart.

With these vague parameters we at Not in Hall of Fame put our own committee together and came up with the top 250 artists whom we feel deserve consideration for enshrinement in Cleveland.  Are we right?  Are we wrong?   We know two things for sure; the first is that while compiling this list we felt we could make a viable case for multiple artists to be in our number one slot, the second was that it was a blast coming up with it.  Let us know what you think and based on who gets inducted, who becomes newly eligible, your opinions and how our own perceptions change, we will see how we rank them in the following year.

Until then, Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!

Sincerely,

The Not in Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Committee.

Another important Punk band from Los Angeles, Bad Religion achieved the rare feat of selling multiple records without losing their status in the Underground scene. Always evolving, Bad Religion would always flirt with other musical styles though keep them in Hardcore Punk setting. Bad Religion could squeak into the Hall in years to come as they have a representation of…
Yes, he is eligible this soon! Lil’ Wayne survived from a place that musical stars don’t usually come from; a pre-teen novelty act. That was how he was first seen in the public eye which was as a tween Hardcore Rapper, but regardless of the ability, it still had a novelty feel to it. Wayne did not fade away, and…
As one of the most successful group of the 90’s, TLC had a large string of hits that combined Hip Hop, Pop and other forms of Dance music.  As successful as they were, they were equally controversial as they were involved in as much personal turmoil as any Male Hip Hop figure of the decade.  Behind all that lay a threesome…
Without a lot of radio airplay or really support of any kind, My Morning Jacket became one of the great stars of the American music scene. With a mixture of Folk, Rock and other Roots based American musical styles; the group easily became one of the most genuine acts in the business and the indirect masters of the Neo Psychedelic…
The 1970’s may have been full of Singer/Songwriters but the decade that followed saw that genre dry up quickly. That made the success of Tracy Chapman that much more unlikely. She didn’t exactly have MTV good looks; she sang in a style against her racial stereotype and was not even attempting to be “cool”. Despite all of that, Chapman had…
The next selection is a band synonymous with early 60’s surf music.  Jan & Dean was certainly a key part of that scene, though they always seemed to be in the shadow of the Beach Boys.
Considered an icon in his native Canada, Gordon Lightfoot was a Singer/Songwriter known for his baritone voice and his run of hits. Amongst the Singer/Songwriters who achieved fame in the 70’s, Lightfoot was stripped down even for that genre. At his best when armed with only an acoustic guitar, Lightfoot may have been the best storyteller of his genre, and…
Eligible in 2024 (He had a recorded singles in 1999), 50 Cent exploded onto the Rap and Mainstream charts and for the year of 2003 could be considered the biggest musical star in the world. Despite his Hardcore East Coast Rap style, 50 Cent was at the right place and the right time to become a major star. Although his…
Let us pose an ethical question shall we? Is it wrong for us to want to see the Grass Roots inducted into the Hall of Fame, just so we can see an acceptance speech from their former bass player, Creed Bratton (of the Office)? Maybe it isn’t the worst reason to want to see a band inducted, though we are…
There has been a lot of debate as to whether Hip Hop belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To us at NIHOF, we believe it does belong and with the past inductions of Grandmaster Flash and Run D.M.C., it is clear that the Rap question has been answered. Had we launched this site two years ago, Run D.M.C.…
There are many themes on this list, and it is time to again explore that of British bands that achieve critical acclaim and commercial success in Europe but not so much in the United States. Considering that Echo & the Bunnymen drew a bit from the Doors, it could be considered a little puzzling that they did not become bigger…
If you ask people about the Carpenters, chances are you will hear two distinct opinions. Those who loved them will point to the warm soothing voice of Karen Carpenter and the skillfully crafted Pop songs that they produced. Their detractors point towards their lack of Rock and Roll sound and consider their saccharine sweet music as an indicator of all…
Though they may have despised the term “Trip Hop”, there is little doubt that the English duo which comprised England’s Massive Attack was the originator of that genre.  With a Hip Hop, Soul, Dub mix a hypnotic Dance sound was created that was amongst the most influential of its time.  The Trip Hop sound exploded through the 90’s and its…
There have been many bands that were known for their experimentalism, but we are hard pressed to find a band that used more non Rock genres to create music that found its way into the Rock canon.  In a decade that celebrated independent music, Stereolab may have had the most “independent” sound of all.  Like much of the Krautrock sound…
The early 90’s brought a lot of attention to the Pacific Northwest music scene, and there were many who thought it came out of nowhere. The reality was that Alternative music in its various forms was alive and well and if anyone was the early champion of the state of Washington it might very well be the Sonics.
Although they are virtually unknown outside their native Canada, it can be easily argued that the Tragically Hip were the definition of Canadian music.
Beyonce Knowles may have embarked on a stellar solo career, but she was first known as part of Destiny’s Child; an ultra-successful all girl vocal group that scored a myriad of hits, many of which are still heard on radio today. Beyonce is a megastar; which is certain, but is she a Hall of Famer, and if so, should be…
It isn’t the fact that Portishead has only done three studio albums fourteen years apart that makes them an intriguing Hall of Fame candidate.  It is that Portishead could be the band that can get into the Hall while representing the Trip Hop genre.  Portishead was not he first to perform Trip Hop, but they performed it in an almost…
With a string of straight forward Rock albums in the 80’s Bryan Adams felt like a breath of fresh air to many disillusioned music listeners who struggled to identify with the New Wave sounds or Heavy Metal that seemed to split the music world. Adams was a safe option and maybe that would become a problem for Adams later. As…
It seemingly took forever but after nomination after nomination the Stooges finally got into the Hall. With that said is their a chance for their charismatic front man Iggy Pop to get in for his successful solo work?
