Rock and Roll (588)

Music.  It has the ability to bring people together.  It can stir up hidden emotions.  It can cause you to get up and physically move.  It can help you through your work day.  It separates generations.  We could describe it for page after page in terms both specific and vague but music simply means different things to different people.  Likely, many of these things were on the mind of the builders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, a tribute to those who built up the genre of Rock and Roll.

Their intentions certainly seemed clear enough.  Their website states that “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors the legendary performers, producers, songwriters, disc jockeys and others who have made rock and roll the force that it is in our culture”.  For our purposes, we are going to focus on the performer section of the Hall.  That being said, the first rule of eligibility is very simple.  Once an artist has gone twenty five years after the release of their first record, they become eligible.  After that it becomes a little murky.  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame states that “criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Influence and significance is certainly open to interpretation.  For that matter, so is Rock and Roll.  When Bill Haley sang Rock around the Clock over sixty years ago was he describing a sound, a look or maybe just an attitude?  Did the songwriters just like the word “rock”?  The origin of Rock music is so difficult to pinpoint its subsequent evolution is just as equally hard to chart.

With these vague parameters we at Not in Hall of Fame put our own committee together and came up with the top 250 artists whom we feel deserve consideration for enshrinement in Cleveland.  Are we right?  Are we wrong?   We know two things for sure; the first is that while compiling this list we felt we could make a viable case for multiple artists to be in our number one slot, the second was that it was a blast coming up with it.  Let us know what you think and based on who gets inducted, who becomes newly eligible, your opinions and how our own perceptions change, we will see how we rank them in the following year.

Until then, Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World!

Sincerely,

The Not in Hall of Fame Rock and Roll Committee.

If you check through the list of critics top tens in the late 70’s and early 80’s you will find it littered with Punk bands. Despite the Misfits being one of the more popular Punk bands in history, critical love and the Misfits were not hand in hand.
The more we thought about it, the more we became amazed as to just how much musical influence was coming out of Germany in the late 60’s and 70’s. One of those bands was the Berlin based group; Tangerine Dream was no exception as their musical contributions is felt very much in multiple genres.
The Rock and Roll world is littered with performers who peaked at their first album and never seemed to even come close to that level of success commercially or critically again. In the case of John Hiatt, it took him years to find that high water mark.
We believe that Robin Trower’s best chance for induction may come as a member of Procul Harum, but Trower really came into his own after he left that band and became a solo artist. Robin Trower was then allowed to continue his experiments with the guitar, and it has been said that Trower picked up where Jimi Hendrix left off.…
With a resume of over forty five top one hundred Billboard hits; you would think that Brook Benton would have been the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by now. The truth is, Benton has yet to even receive a nomination as of yet and be the first to show exceptional success yet befuddle the Hall as to whether he…
The Manic Street Preachers may have been virtually unknown in North America, but they set the English music scene ablaze in the 90’s. Going against the Shoegazing and Acid House movements, the Manics seemed determined to put the rebelliousness back in Rock and Roll. They pushed an anarchistic Rock agenda and though they were a band that achieved notoriety though…
Just because you are not known in the annals of Billboard Magazine does not mean that you are not well known to the world of musicians.  Should an informal poll of successful musicians as to which band has the most respect the Meters would be a serious contender to top that list.
You may not want to hear this, but there is a decent chance that Britney Spears has a decent shot for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Spears has been a major force on the Pop and Dance chart for years and there is little reason to think that can’t continue for years. Major success like that is hard…
A very polarizing band even in Progressive Rock circles, the Alan Parsons Project certainly had its share of fans who loved their science fiction based artistic brand of music. Those who disliked the Project found them pretentious and overproduced. They were however unique, and likely deserve better than to have their string of success be reduced to the opening entrance…
A lot of Rock and Roll is image and there are examples upon examples where a carefully constructed image is what gets you noticed. Sometimes though the image you created to get you noticed is what may hold you back in the long run. On some level, Culture Club may fit this example.
If you only know The Roots from their role as the house band on Jimmy Fallon’s late night talk show, than you really don’t understand just how important this group is.
The Guitar Man, Johnny Winter was as recognized by his ability to master the Blues as he was for his albino appearance. Winter was easily among the most talented Blues guitarists of his generation and his musical legacy saw him take his guitar across every variation of the Blues imaginable. Winter did have some chart success and had he chose…
We did not have an internal debate as to whether Johnny Ace should be inducted. We agreed that he should but as the bulk of his work predated the Rock and Roll explosion we are not sure if he is a Roots and Influences candidate instead.
The last half of the 1980’s was very kind to Poison. They were one of the top Hair Metal bands selling out arenas world wide and dominating music television. Their music was fun party music mixed with some of the most successful power ballads of the era. Like many bands, drug abuse and infighting hampered their growth, but in the…
One of the criticisms of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is that some of the potential inductees to the Hall may be considered more because of their draw at the ceremony as opposed to their music. There are many whose induction speech might bring tears to eyes. Somehow, we don’t think that Ted Nugent is one of those…
As another Punk Rock band from New York City, Richard Hell & the Voidoids had a brief recording career but a powerful one. Credited with helping to establish Punk’s look and style, the Voidoids released one album in 1977 which was as good as anything else the genre produced. Whether or not they can get in the strength of that…
The Fugees have been called a one album wonder, and that is a statement that bears a bit of truth as their debut album in 1994 was not popular nor was it that critically acclaimed.  However, the album that was considered to be that one album of greatness (The Score) was a brilliant effort that was amongst the best that Hip Hop…
On paper, System of a Down has all the intangibles that should make them a Hall of Fame inductee. They have acclaimed records, Grammy Awards, a legion of fans and a unique sound. The band successfully merged Metal, Rock, Experimentalism and the Middle East and should make the Hall of Fame’s influence quotient. Yet, there are bands like this that Cleveland…
Is there a generation that doesn’t look at some sort of reverence to the ones before? Music is no different, as there is a constant form of retro cool that keeps reoccurring in various forms. We have wondered if nobody understood this better than the Stray Cats, the band who ushered in the Rockabilly revival in the early 1980’s.
As the only real band of note to emerge from the 80’s Paisley Underground scene, The Bangles reached huge Pop success by the decade’s end. Most people remember them from their monster smash; Walk Like an Egyptian, but they had more Psychedelic infused Pop hits and were a much more complete band than they were perceived. A Hall induction is…
