Sarah McLachlin to the Canadian Music HOF

It has been announced by the Canadian Music Hall of Fame that Sarah McLachlan will be the next inductee. The official induction will take place at this year’s Juno Awards on April 2 in Ottawa, Ontario.
McLachlan is a multi time Juno Award winner and a three time Grammy Award winner. She has nine top ten hits in Canada and two in the United States and is the originator of the Lilith Fair Concerts that promoted women in music.
While this is not of the same level of prestige of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the explosion of the Canadian music scene over the past twenty-five years certainly makes this an incredible accolade.

Frank Thomas softening his HOF stance towards the PED users

Frank Thomas has always been critical of PED users getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame. At the recent “Sox Fest”, The Big Hurt has softened his stance on that…sort of.
Ivan Rodriguez, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines were selected for Cooperstown this year, and Thomas is not overly thrilled with two of them anyway:
“We have two great players going in (this year) and they know. It's no secret. If they didn't do it they would be stomping and kicking on interviews, 'I didn't do it.'
If you didn't, you come to the forefront, 'Let's take a lie detector test," and these guys won't do it. Some of these guys were great players, but they wouldn't have been great players without drugs."
Thomas did not use Rodriguez and Bagwell by name, but it was clear that these were the two players he was speaking of.
Rodriguez, who enter the Hall on his first year of eligibility was named in Jose Canseco’s book, “Juiced” as someone who he personally injected with PEDs has been someone who many have speculated (though never proven) to be a PED user. Bagwell has also been accused by some, but again, never proven.
While Frank Thomas is “not happy” that Bagwell and Rodriguez are inducted, he now has developed an “all or nothing” attitude in regards to higher profile PED suspected users:
“Now some guys are getting passes and some guys are not. It's wrong. If you're going to punish Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens, how can you let the rest of these guys get in?
Either you let all those guys in and put them in a special wing or you clean it up and keep everybody out."
Based on hard line stance that Frank Thomas has taken in the past towards PED users in the Baseball Hall, this is practically a 180, or at least an acknowledgement of the era itself.
This coincides with many writers relaxing their stance on the PED users, especially with Bud Selig selected as a Today’s Game inductee. Those writers claim that the PED rise and subsequent ignoring of it for years happened under Bud Selig’s watch.
For what it is worth, Thomas doe support the induction of Pete Rose to the Hall and was excited with the selection of Tim Raines to Cooperstown.
Who will be the next Baseball Hall of Famer to come out in support, or against these former players? We know it won’t take long to find out!

Three Inductors set for the RRHOF

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame still has a lot of unanswered questions, but we are learning slowly about some of the inductors for the ceremony on April 7 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Three presenters have been announced.
Neil Young will be inducting Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne will be inducting Joan Baez and Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush will be inducting Yes. It is notable that all of these inductors are Rock and Roll Hall of Famers themselves.
It is not known yet who will be inducting ELO, Nile Rodgers, Tupac Shakur and Journey.
We will keep our ears open for more Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony news. You know there will be a lot more coming!

The Seattle Mariners to retire Edgar Martinez' Number

As you know, we are slowly (or dare we say methodically?) working on the Top 50 for every major sports team in the big four of North American sports. The plan after is to then look at how each team celebrates their former players/executives in terms of retired numbers/franchise halls of fame, etc. This makes it news to us that the Seattle Mariners will retire the #11 of Edgar Martinez.
This is no small honor, as the Mariners have been stingy with their retired numbers. To date, only the league mandate #42 of Jackie Robinson and that of recently elected Hall of Famer, Ken Griffey Jr.
While it remains to be seen whether or not Martinez will join Griffey Jr. in Cooperstown, his chances grew as he made it to 58.6% on the ballot, his highest ever, and by quite a substantial margin. For years, it appeared that the former Designated Hitter was not going to be selected, but the man who played his entire career in Seattle seems to have a real shot at the ultimate individual trophy in all of Baseball.
Martinez career numbers include 2,247 Hits, 309 Home Runs, two Batting Titles, a career Slash Line of .312/.418/.515 and a bWAR of 66.4. He went to seven All Star Games and won five Silver Slugger Awards.
The ceremony will take place on August 12.
