Although the J. Geils Band appeared as an overnight success in the early 80’s, they were anything but. After delivering a series of albums throughout the 1970’s that delivered a few minor hits, the J. Geils band found a good following in the North East but could not translate the energy of their live act to studio recordings or to the radio. When they did hit it big, they broke up shortly after, thus raising the question whether the overall body of work is Hall worthy. With two recent nominations and a perceived love from Jann Wenner, they could find themselves in.
There have been many who have called the omission of Connie Francis to the Hall as the biggest crime the Hall committee has done thus far. We don’t necessarily agree with that, but we don’t completely disagree that she was the template that other female Pop stars followed. Her large catalogue of hit singles had few equals in the early 60’s but despite her massive success (and make no mistake, she was extremely popular) very little about Connie screamed “Rock Star” and this is likely why the Hall has ignored her thus far.
With the combination of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio the British Heavy Metal band Rainbow helped perpetuate the Metal genre in the 1970’s. Their blend of medieval imagery with a classical composition generated them a solid fan base. Though their later efforts were substantially weaker, their 70’s work was considered some of the better Metal of the 70’s. Having said that, if Blackmore can’t get in with Deep Purple, what realistic chance does Rainbow have?
With all due respect to Paul Anka, Jack Scott crossed the border and became the first Canadian of note to really make a dent in the American music market. Despite growing up across the border in Detroit, Scott delivered Rockabilly music better than most did in the American South and had the fans and chart success to prove it. With enough Roots Rock credibility, Scott has a shot to be the next Canadian inducted.
