147. Gordon Lightfoot

Considered an icon in his native Canada, Gordon Lightfoot was a Singer/Songwriter known for his baritone voice and his run of hits. Amongst the Singer/Songwriters who achieved fame in the 70’s, Lightfoot was stripped down even for that genre. At his best when armed with only an acoustic guitar, Lightfoot may have been the best storyteller of his genre, and at the very least he was among the most captivating. As a Canadian who achieved success in the United States, he might have an outside shot to be the next Canuck to get enshrined in Cleveland.

256. Sonny & Cher

Although we have Cher as a solo act is ranked significantly higher, she may have a better shot as one half of Sonny & Cher. Though often forgotten, the duo were huge stars in the 60’s and despite being left for dead by the decade’s end, they managed to resurrect their career and launch a million variety show knock offs with it. Although their image was kitschy, Cher’s huge popularity could grant this duo an induction if for no other reason than to honor the pint sized svengali who brought the world Cherilyn Sarkisian.

421. Cocteau Twins

Of the many subgenres that came out of the 80’s, Dream Pop was the basic merging of Ambient sounds with Post Punk. The Scottish group, Cocteau Twins was one of the first to be associated with that genre and as such created atmospheric music that was stylish and hypnotic. Their Dream Pop style that they perfected would prove to be one of their more influential subgenres of 80’s Alternative music and has been credited with inspiring the Shoegazing sound of the early 90’s. Like others on this list, their influence did not translate into the United States, and as such enshrinement is not even a remote possibility.

282. Steve Earle

The trend of artists on this list who struggles to find airplay on radio continues with Steve Earle. With the main exception of Copperhead Road, Earle’s music was too Country for Rock stations, and the songs that sounded Country enough were laden with leftist politics which generally does not fit the traditional Country audience. At his core, he is a basic American Roots Rocker who although the parallels that he gets to Bruce Springsteen are not completely unjustified, he may always struggle to find one tenth of Bruce’s audience.
