Bingo Long

Bingo Long
We are thrilled that we have found a way to nominate Lando Calrissian….er…Billy Dee Williams, who could be one of the coolest men of all time. As Negro League pitcher, Bingo Long, Williams uses his signature charm to start his own breakaway barnstorming Baseball team, and formed the most entertaining team in Baseball. The movie had its moments, but failed to capture a sizable audience…at least not as much as he did as Lando…or even when he pitched Colt 45.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
The Bingo Long All-Stars & Travelling Motor Kings (1976)

Actor:
Billy Dee Williams

Position Portrayed:
Pitcher

Played for:
The Bingo Long All Stars

Why you should vote for him:
If the Hall is based on charm, it is hard to better than Billy Dee.

Why you should not vote for him:
The film was not a huge hit, nor did it achieve cult status.

Billy Chapel

Billy Chapel
With Vin Scully acting as the soundtrack (and it does not get any better than that), Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) pitched a perfect game against the New York Yankees in what was to be his last game in the Majors. As always, Costner is excellent as an athlete, though this time as an aging Pitcher on the tail end of his career. As he pitches his gem, Chapel reminisces about his personal relationship with his girlfriend, bringing the film to equal parts sports and romance; which may not appeal to the Baseball fans as much, but it did make it a more rounded film, and one that can be enjoyed by sports fans (and their spouses alike).

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
For Love of the Game (1999)

Actor:
Kevin Costner

Position Portrayed:
Pitcher

Played for:
Detroit Tigers

Why you should vote for him:
A perfect game against the Bronx Bombers is no easy task.

Why you should not vote for him:
The movie is a little on the sappy side.

Benny The Jet Rodriguez
The undisputed talent of the Sandlot kids, Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez was not just a great Baseball player, but the cool kid who had no problem embracing others for what could easily be categorized as “uncool”.

Roy Munson

Roy Munson
The 1979 Iowa Amateur Bowling Champion never lived up to his billing. Losing your right hand in a con gone wrong can do that. To us, the character of Roy Munson is one of the greatest comedic characters in a sports flick. From the bad clothes, comb over hairdo and just being the unluckiest son of a bitch we ever saw in a movie, Munson is the definition of “lovable loser”. We would consider voting for him just for his puking reaction after having sex with his ghastly landlord to avoid eviction; actually we are laughing aloud just thinking about it. Chances are there a few scenes from that movie that have you chuckle just recalling it.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Kingpin (1996)

Actor:
Woody Harrelson

Why you should vote for him:
It was one of the best comedic sports performances ever.

Why you should not vote for him:
You may not view bowling as a sport.
