Scott Howard "The Wolf"

Scott Howard The WolfWe really like Michael J. Fox, and chances are there are many of you out there who do to. Now, his lone sports related role as wallflower high school kid turned basketball star werewolf was not exactly Oscar worthy, but it was fun and still gets a lot of play on cable reruns. Fox may not have been the man who played as the “Wolf” (That was done by Loyola Marymount Freshman, Jeff Glosser) but did that really matter? What does matter is that for our purposes is that there is a significant amount of basketball in the film (some of which is plot related) and both Scott Howard and his alter ego as the “Wolf” had moments where they shined on the court and won the big game. Isn’t that what you expect from a sports themed movie?

The Bullet Points:
Movie(s) Appeared:
Teen Wolf (1985)

Actor:
Michael J. Fox

Position Portrayed:
Point Guard

Played for:
Deacon Beavers H.S.

Why you should vote for him:
Michael J. Fox remained so likeable in what was a mediocre movie. Also, this is your only chance to vote for Fox, as he never did another sports related film.

Why you should not vote for him:
This was the least plausible role in sports cinema.

Saleh

Saleh
There have been a few players who became big NBA stars from the continent of Africa, namely Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe Mutombo, and others who would go on to have solid professional careers. Africa wasn’t flooding the NBA, nor was they all from one particular country, but it was however noticed throughout the world of Basketball.

Apparently someone from Hollywood noticed too, as they felt there was a need to make a movie about Kevin Bacon recruiting an African Center. The film was not terrible, but was largely forgettable. In fact, we are not even sure what African country it was set in, or even if it was disclosed at all. Basically, we were treated to images an often smiling African center who could dunk. Sorry, that’s really all we recall; which may be more than most people who watched the film.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
The Air up There (1994)

Actor:
Charles Gitonga Maina

Position Portrayed:
Center

Played for:
His African Village

Why you should vote for him:
Hmmmm…. Give us some time to come up with a reason.

Why you should not vote for him:
Was there ever a reason this film was made other than branch the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon to African actors?

Russ Tyler

Russ Tyler
Brought in to appeal to the urban cool demographic, Russ Tyler (Kenan Thompson) was a great street hockey player with a sharp tongue that naturally translated well on the ice. Wait, you are saying that doesn’t seem logical? In the Mighty Dicks series, nothing really is, (in D2, their chief rival was Iceland, who has never participated in any major International Ice Hockey Tournament), so we will overlook a lot as long as it entertaining. Kenan Thompson was at least that.

The Bullet Points:
Movies Appeared:
D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)
D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996)

Actor:
Kenan Thompson

Position Portrayed:
Defence

Played for:
The Mighty Ducks

Why you should vote for him:
He was given a few cute lines.

Why you should not vote for him:
From street hockey to ice hockey that easy? C’mon man!

Rip

Rip
Hulk Hogan’s first leading role…..well, it should have been his last. As campy as “No Holds Barred” was (it has veered into that strange ‘so bad it is must watch like a car crash) it has sadly become the Godfather II of Hogan’s overall body of work. There is no point going into too much detail here.   Hulk Hogan played “Rip”, who coincidentally was a professional wrestler who is the top star of a cable network, and is being courted by an “evil” owner of rival network…..and wait a minute, are we discussing the “plot” here? We will finish by saying that in the film, Hulk made someone piss their pants, avenged his brother, defeated a larger opponent and appears to have killed the evil network owner at the end. Now that’s how a “Real American” solves a problem.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
No Holds Barred (1989)

Actor:
Hulk Hogan

Why you should vote for him:
Because you say your prayers, eat your vitamins and you are a Real American, brother!

Why you should not vote for him:
Hogan’s acting is Golden Raspberry worthy…..especially the scene where he is crying over his brother who was in the hospital at the hands of Zeus.
