Paulie Pennino
We enjoyed watching Paulie Pennino in the Rocky Films, but we are happy that he is not our friend. Actually, you have to wonder why Rocky Balboa was ever friends with the guy in the first place, as he was always spouting off negative comments, drank too much, treated his sister like crap, tried to break Rocky’s arms, and signed over power of attorney which bankrupted Balboa. Even appearing as a corner man for Rocky, he was five shades of useless; only offering up the advice to “hit the one in the middle” in Rocky IV as a moment of “sage advice”.

With all of those problems, Paulie was still loyal to Rocky, as was Rocky to him. Sure, it was dysfunctional, but would those films (and he did appear in all six) be the same without him? Probably not.

The Bullet Points:
Movies Appeared:
Rocky (1976)
Rocky II (1979)
Rocky III (1982)
Rocky IV (1985)
Rocky V (1990)
Rocky Balboa (2006)

Actor:
Burt Young

Role Portrayed:
Bum/Friend/Corner Man of Rocky Balboa

Why you should vote for him:
How about because he was the owner of our favorite 80’s robot?

Why you should not vote for him:
Considering he was Rocky’s friend, he was sure a pain in the ass to the champ.

Paul Aufiero

Paul Aufiero
We all know fans like this. Often, we hope we don’t become one. The story of Paul Aufiero is one that is scary, has no happy ending and puts sports in a perspective that we should all remember. Played by Patton Oswalt, Aufiero is a near middle aged parking lot attendant who still lives with his mom whose love of the New York Giants reaches levels of pitifulness; especially after he is assaulted by his favorite player. This is one of those roles where after watching you evaluate your own fandom of your favorite team.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Big Fan (2009)

Actor:
Patton Oswalt

Role Portrayed:
Superfan of the New York Giants

Why you should vote for him:
Perhaps, because you are also a fan of the New York Giants to that degree.

Why you should not vote for him:
This is far from a feel good sports story here.

Patches O'Houlihan

Patches YoungPatches Old
As far as we can tell this is the lone entry on the ballot where we have two actors portraying the same role, where we have a young Patches O’Houlihan (Hank Azaria) and a much older one played by Rip Torn. O’Houlihan was a seven time ADAA All-Star, who taught potential Dodgeball participants the five rules of Dodgeball:

Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge (again).

O’Houlihan’s teaching (including throwing wrenches at his protégés) helped the Average Joe’s win the Las Vegas ending, though not before he met his end in what had to the most ironic film death of all-time.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)

Actor:
Hank Azaria/Rip Torn

Role Portrayed:
Coach of the Average Joe’s

Why you should vote for him:
Because Rip Torn gave us this mugshot:
Rip Torn Mugshot

Why you should not vote for him:
Just what was O’Houlihan doing in between that black and white film and meeting Vince Vaughn?

Norman Dale
There are times when we want to institute a “Gene Hackman Rule” which basically means if you see his name in the opening credits, you know the movie won’t stink (or at least he will give it a redeeming quality).   This isn’t to say that Hoosiers would not have worked with someone else cast as Coach Norman Dale, but don’t you buy Hackman as a sage sports authority figure before he even utters a word?

Norman Dale was a lot more than just a coach. He was a student himself, learning from past mistakes (he was fired from Ithaca after striking a student), a wall when dealing with the local townspeople who questioned his style, and compassionate when needed. Norman Dale did a lot in this movie to grab your attention, but it is what he didn’t do that made you watch more.

Come to think of it, we take it back…only Gene Hackman could be Norman Dale.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
Hoosiers (1986)

Actor:
Gene Hackman

Role Portrayed:
Coach of the Hickory H.S. Basketball Team

Why you should vote for him:
We will play the acting card here. Also, my we add, they won the big one at the end.

Why you should not vote for him:
Take away Chitwood, and Dale is nothing. Nothing we tell you!
