The New Main Street Singers

New Main Street Singers The
From the brilliant mockumentary, A Mighty Wind, we have the “New Main Street Singers” who as the name suggests are the new incarnation of the Main Street Singers. This folk group continues to perform, though they have not been overly successful. Still, when you have a group of actors who are this gifted, you can’t help but pay attention to everything they did on screen. We know that we did.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
A Mighty Wind (2003)

Actors:
Paul Dooley (George Menschell)
Jane Lynch (Laurie Bohner)
John Michael Higgins (Terry Bohner)
Parker Posey (Sissy Knox)
Mark Monisa (Mike Maryama)

Songs you might remember:
Never Did No Wandering

Why you should vote for them:
This was a fun group of acting talent.

Why you should not vote for them:
They did not have a signature song in the film.

The Nerds

Nerds The
One of the best regular sketches from the early years of Saturday Night Live were the “nerd” characters played by Gilda Radner and Bill Murray. What many forget is that their debut performance of this bit is that along with regular host, Steve Martin they were trying to push their band’s album and make it in the Rock and Roll world. Needless to say, their “album” was not picked up and “I’ll Give You My Lunch Money” never made it to the top ten on Billboard.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show Appeared:
Saturday Night Live (1977)

Actors:
Bill Murray (Todd DiLamuca)
Gilda Radner (Lisa Loopner)
Steve Martin (Charles Knerlman)

Songs you might remember:
I’ll Give You My Lunch Money

Why you should vote for them:
Bill Murray is a god for many. Count us among them.

Why you should not vote for them:
This is an iconic series of characters, but how many remember that this is how they started?

Neal Fox

Neal Fox
In the awful film, Uptown Girls, the main character (the late Brittany Murphy) falls for Neal Fox who is a singer who becomes successful after he dumps her. Actually, we should have dumped this movie before we got halfway through.

Nature's Children

Natures Children
From the underappreciated concept album (The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands) by the Turtles we have an album where different “bands” appeared. This allowed the group to not only stretch their skills musically, as each “band” had a completely different sound and also showcase their humor.

As “Nature’s Children”, the Turtles performed “You Showed Me”, which was a very good Pop song, and arguably the most memorable of the album (though it was not the biggest hit). Still, we wish the band name they chose for this song was as clever as some of the others they went with.

The Bullet Points:
Album Appeared:
The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands (1968)

Actors/Performers:
The Turtles

Songs you might remember:
You Showed Me

Why you should vote for them:
This lone song from Nature’s Children was a hit. That gives it something that 95 percent of the others on the ballot do not have.

Why you should not vote for them:
We aren’t sure ourselves if the Turtles billing themselves under another name for one song only should even count.
