278. Killing Joke

Although it is widely accepted that New Wave was an offshoot of Punk, and that New Wave and other Alternative forms of music in the 80’s helped factor into Grunge and 90’s Industrial there are many of those 80’s bands that don’t seem to match that timeline. This statement has never been attributed to England’s Killing Joke, whose Alternative sound helped shape the next decade in more than one style.

Breaking through in 1980, Killing Joke was far from a standard New Wave attraction. With their brand of brooding Post Punk, Killing Joke utilized Heavy Metal components that gave their dark music an aggressive “headbanging” flavor. Killing Joke would also use danceable beats in other songs and were great tunes for the introspective depressed set who still wanted to get up and dance. Although they were not the most commercially viable (though they still sold many albums), they were very influential to styles on both sides of the Atlantic. We won’t hold our breath for their induction, but we would for those they influenced.
