56. David Soul
Don’t Give Up On Us
Highest Billboard Position:
#1 in 1977

I think at this time on the list, it just has to be said that we find many things of the 1970’s strange and confusing.  We could go on all day about the baffling trends of that decade, but we don’t have enough space on this website to accommodate it.  We will only focus on one aspect of the 70’s for now, and that will be their choice of Sex Symbols, as apparently David Soul from the Police TV Series, Starsky and Hutch was one.

For those not familiar with the program, you can get a decent synopsis of the show by watching the Beastie Boys’ Sabotage video as it nails that show (any many others from that time frame perfectly).  Soul was not an actor who decided he wanted to be a singer, as that was originally his true love, but it was as an actor that he gained fame.  With his new find television exposure, he was able to find exposure for his music.  As it turned out Soul (who coincidently had none), really should have stuck to his second calling of acting.  His lone hit, “Don’t, Give Up On Us” was schmaltzy crap, yet somehow found its way to the top of the charts.  Women all over the country (a by product of the Alan Alda effect) were going nuts over this “sensitive man” drivel and many labeled Soul (who still has none) as a sex symbol.  Again we ask, why?
