To become a top ten hit, it seems fairly clear that your sound has to be watered down to gain some type of mass appeal. With some artists, this doesn’t seem like a crime, as they are producing generic Pop which has been done for decades. With others, it feels like a crime against the genre. Snow’s Number #1 hit, Informer definitely falls into the latter category.
We are fairly certain that when the originators of Reggae sat around making music in Jamaica, the bastardization of their product by a douchey white Canadian was not what they had in mind. Watering down Reggae in a way that Labatt’s waters down beer, Snow yammers on about being an informer to the Police. Or at least, we think that is what he is saying. Beyond the words Informer, and what sounds like “Licky Boom Boom Yeah”, we have no idea what he is saying. We can therefore argue that this in one of only a handful of songs that went to number one in America that was not spoken in English. It is however one of the cornucopias of songs that went to number one that is crap.
