Without question, the greatest season that Buffinton had was with the Boston Beanaters in 1884 when he went 48 and 16 with a bWAR over 16, but arguably his second and third best seasons were with the then named Philadelphia Quakers and as mentioned before they would see him as an elite pitcher in the National League.
In all three of his seasons with the Quakers, Buffinton was a 20 win pitcher and in his last two seasons he went first and second in bWAR for Pitchers. His 1888 season was especially good with a 1.91 ERA with a 0.957 WHIP. Buffinton probably would have won a lot more games had he better run support.
Again, this might be a bit of a stretch to rank him that high but the advanced metrics tell a different tale.
