Signed in 1957, Short would become a regular in the Phils’ starting rotation in 1963 and from ’64 to ’68 he would see his greatest stretch in baseball. In that timeframe, the quirky hurler would have four 17 Win seasons including a 20 Win campaign in 1966. Short would be named an All-Star twice (1964 & 1967) both of which were years where he had a sub 2.40 ERA and finished third in that statistic.
Incidentally, Chris Short will probably be known best for a string of limited success where both he and Jim Bunning were overworked in the pennant stretch of 1964 where the team collapsed around them. Regardless of that Short would win 132 Games with 1,585 Strikeouts for the Phillies, a more than respectable number for the franchise. He was chosen for the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 1991.
