From Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical film, Almost Famous, we are introduced to Stillwater, an up and coming Rock band in the 1973. The music in the film is perfectly framed (way to many period music pieces don’t fit at all) and we aren’t just treated to a good band, but a great behind the scenes look at their struggles, both personal and professional. The songs were co-written by Crowe’s real life wife, Nancy Wilson from Heart, and the film was told from the point of view of the Crowe based character who was covering the band for Rolling Stone Magazine. Incidentally, in the late 70’s, there really was a band called Stillwater, who allowed Crowe to use the name of the band after reading the script.
Considering how fantastic this film was and how solid the music was, we have a real contender here.

From the ahead of its time British film, Privilege gives us Steven Shorter (played by Paul Jones who was the lead singer of Manfred Mann) who is manipulated by the church and state and turned into a messiah type leader. His popularity is higher than anyone else we can think of shown on film, and his fans are more fanatical than anything else we have ever seen. Of course this was a ploy to turn him into a Christian puppet and in this faux documentary Shorter breaks down as one would expect. You may not know this film, but it’s worth a look.

We wonder if we are the only ones who forgot that Elliott Gould was a major star in the 1970’s? In 1981, he starred in the “Devil and Max Devlin” where as Devlin he played a shady landlord who is killed and sent to Hell. He is given a proposition that should he convince three people to sell his soul, he would relieved of his soul belonging to the devil. One of his targets is Stella Summers, an aspiring 18 year old singer looking to get ahead, making her an easy target. We did hear her sing, but realistically the stars were Gould and Bill Cosby who played the devil.

Steel Dragon

Based on the real life scenario that took place with Judas Priest, Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) went from fronting a Steel Dragon tribute band, to fronting Steel Dragon. The film did very poorly, yet it is one of those movies that everyone seems to have seen, indicating that this is a guilty pleasure for many. Perhaps it was because the songs were basic, or that is well cast, or that it is one of those comfort films that you can have on the background while you are doing housework. We would not be surprised to see this get in one day.
