Not in Hall of Fame News

And just like that, we have another major retirement in the NBA that received little fanfare. Tracy McGrady has announced that he is officially done with playing in the National Basketball Association. “T-Mac” leaves behind what many consider to be a cluttered legacy, as he is a two time scoring champion, but his critics constantly point to his inability to lead his team past the first round of the NBA playoffs (and no, last year with the Spurs doesn’t count).          Statistically, McGrady has the credentials. Not only is he a two time scoring champion as earlier mentioned, he eclipsed the…
The answer is, with a whimper. That is the Jeopardy question to “How did Allen Iverson retire, which a decade ago seemed impossible. It was reported that Iverson was going to announce an official retirement, which considering he has not played professionally in two years (three in North America) is a little anti-climactic.           That is not how we will remember A.I., as we will think of him as the Shooting Guard who redefined the culture of the National Basketball Association, and brought an urban grit that really did not exist before. We remember him as the man who carried…
Our work on the existing Hockey Hall of Fame Classes continue. We have now made our way to the year of 1984 (which for the record is easily among our favourite Classes). The Class of 1984 contains:Bernie ParentJacques LemaireJake MilfordPhil EspositoPunch ImlachGang you know the drill. Check it out, and cast your votes and let us know whether you think they deserved their Hall of Fame induction. Look for upcoming classes soon!
We almost missed this one. Finding Baseball Hall of Fame players who rally against the steroids era superstars entering Cooperstown is easy. We have written about it here, and the internet is littered with stories about it. However, we found something interesting on the pennlive.com Sports section whereby Gaylord Perry said he would honor those players should they got in. He added that he believed that some of them would get in; but that is as much as we would learn from the former master of the “Spitball”.          Perry never said (or at least the piece didn’t) whether he thought…
With all the talk of Performance Enhancing Drugs in the world of Baseball, it is nice to look at a genuine superstar of the last twenty five years who has never been linked to a syringe. This weekend, the Seattle Mariners will honor Ken Griffey Jr., and make him the seventh man to enter their Hall of Fame. “Junior” spent his entire 20’s (and one teen year) in a Mariners uniform and easily had his best seasons while playing in the Pacific Northwest. He was a statistical juggernaut there, winning the AL MVP in 1997 and leading the League in…
It is that time again here at Notinhalloffame.com. We have officially revamped our Basketball list, and there are a lot of changes from top to bottom. We have always been critical about the Basketball Hall, which has not been the easiest to follow, and is not high on the public consciousness in comparison to the sports’ popularity. However, it is a sport that we love, and as such, it is time to revise the list. Our top two entries from last year’s list were inducted when first time nominee, Gary Payton (#1) and long-time nominee (#2) Bernard King were selected for…
We knew this day was coming for some time. Alex Rodriguez was suspended by Major League Baseball for the rest of the 2013 Season and the entire 2014 Season for his role in the Biogenesis Scandal. A-Rod was not the only one suspended, but his penalty was far more severe than the other twelve men, as MLB felt they had evidence that he tampered with the investigation and under the by-laws of Baseball, they can penalize him harsher for besmirching the good of the game. Although Rodriguez is currently fighting the decision, we strongly believe that this will end…

RIP: Art Donovan

On the Football Hall of Fame weekend, Canton lost one of its own, in the passing of Art Donovan, who was inducted in 1968. The Defensive Tackle was a five time Pro Bowl Selection and a member of the 1950’s All Decade Team and with the Baltimore Colts was a two time NFL Champion. However, it was not on the field that most people remember him for.Art Donovan was one of the most colourful personalities of all time, and his appearances on the David Letterman Show raised his profile. His humour was transcendent and e would become a popular public…
A week after the Baseball had their Hall of Fame Weekend and inducted no live bodies, Canton added to their legacy by putting in a solid group of (and alive) inductees into the Football Hall of Fame. Relatively speaking, this Hall has been controversy free and has been a model of how Halls should induct players and contributors. We also love the way how the Hall of Fame induction ceremony kicks off the Pre-Season and gets us excited about the upcoming season. We thought we would take one final look at the Class of 2013.Larry Allen was a mountain…
Donovan McNabb officially retired from the National Football League and did so as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Quarterback last played in with the Minnesota Vikings in 2011, where his last few years were not exactly at a level of his glory years with Philadelphia.Although McNabb heard his share of boos in Philly (but what athlete hasn’t), he set virtually every Quarterback record for the franchise. As such, he secured the right to have his number retired in Philadelphia, but does it translate to a bust in Canton? We aren’t so sure.Although he was a six time…
