gold star for USAHOF

27. Vladimir Konstantinov

27. Vladimir Konstantinov

The selection of Vladimir Konstantinov in the 11thRound of the 1989 Draft was as good as stealing.  This was one of the last years that it was considered pointless to take players from the U.S.S.R., and two years later, he defected, joining the Detroit Red Wings in 1991.

Konstantinov was a physical player who was unafraid to fight, atypical of Russian at the time.  Selfless and team-oriented, Konstantinov blended effortless with his teammates and became a popular player in his locker room and among the Detroit fans.

The Defenseman had four 30 Point Seasons, and in 1995-96, he was a Second Team All-Star, finished fourth for the Norris Trophy, and was the NHL leader in Plus/Minus (+60).  The year after, Konstantinov and the Red Wings took it all, winning their first Stanley Cup in decades.

His career ended abruptly six days after the 1997 Stanley Cup win when his limousine lost control of the vehicle.  Although Konstantinov survived, his injuries were serious, and he was never able to play hockey again.  Although he was not on the team in 1998, his name was engraved on the Cup a second time when Detroit win it all that year.
