27. Ray Flaherty

Ray Flaherty came from Gonzaga and played in the semi-pro Los Angeles Wildcats of the American Football League.  The End would later join the New York Yankees of the NFL, but that was short-lived as the squad folded late in 1928.  Flaherty then joined the New York Giants, where he would play until 1935.

With the Giants, Flaherty was a potent football player, earning three First Team All-Pros and leading New York to an NFL Championship in 1934.  When Receiving Stats were first introduced in 1932, Flaherty swept the statistical lead in every category.  Following his playing days, Flaherty became a successful Coach and would win two more Championships as the head of the Washington Redskins.

Flaherty entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a Coach in 1976, and he was one of the first people to have his number retired when New York did so with his number 1 in 1935.
