Queens of Dogtown

Queens of Dogtown
You had to know that any child of Hank Moody would have a lot of artistic ability right? Becca Moody (Madeline Martin) was recruited to join an all-girl Rock band led by Pearl (Zoe Kravitz) and this band was surprisingly good, which actually led to a few people wondering if the band was in fact real. They aren’t, but for a brief moment in time, we forgot about Hank’s sexual exploits.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show Appeared:
Californication (2011)

Actors:
Zoe Kravitz (Pearl, Lead Singer)
Madeline Martin (Becca Moody, Guitar)

Songs you might remember:
Would?

Why you should vote for them:
They were very good.

Why you should not vote for him:
Becca would become a writer and Pearl was never seen again. Maybe they weren’t as good as we remember.

The Queenhaters

Queenhaters The
Mel’s Rockpile was one of our favorite running sketches on SCTV. Watching the confused and nerdy host, Mel Slirrup try to connect with the kids was a great send up of the many shows from that time frame that featured hosts nearly as clueless. Mel would have a lot of musical guests and with the possible exception of Richard Harris; we were fond of the Punk Band, the Queenhaters who well…hated the Queen. We only saw them once, and we don’t know any of the band member’s names but it certainly struck a chord with us.

The Bullet Points:
TV Show Appeared:
SCTV (1983)

Actors:
Martin Short (Vocals)
Eugene Levy (Lead Guitar)
John Candy (Drums)
Andrea Martin (Guitar)
Joe Flaherty (Bass)

Songs you might remember:
I Hate the Bloody Queen

Why you should vote for them:
This is one of the best collections of comedic talent assembled.

Why you should not vote for them:
They had one song, appeared only once and we never knew what their names were.

Quad City Ramblers

Quad City Ramblers TheFrom the underappreciated concept album (The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands) by the Turtles we have an albums where different “bands” appeared. This allowed the group to not only stretch their skills musically, as each “band” had a completely different sound and also showcase their humor.

In the fourth track of the album, the Turtles go Country to what we thought was a solid result in “Too Much Heartsick Feeling”. Actually, when reading the liner notes and listening to the song, we could envision them in a retro (though modern) version of Hee Haw as the musical act. Wait…what does retro but modern?

The Bullet Points:
Album Appeared:
The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands (1968)

Actors/Performers:
The Turtles

Songs you might remember:
Too Much Heartsick Feeling

Why you should vote for them:
This song was decent.

Why you should not vote for them:
We aren’t sure ourselves if the Turtles billing themselves under another name for one song only should even count.

Punk Floyd

Punk Floyd
Formed after the end of the Rutles, Dirk McQuickley (Eric Idle) formed the Punk Rock band, Punk Floyd. His wife Martini, who didn’t sing, joined him; not there was a lot of time for her do so if she was so inclined. The punk genre landed to much shorter songs, though his first single from the three-minute debut album (White Dopes on Punk) lasted as long as it took to say the title.

Like the Rutles, Punk Floyd had an extensive fictional discography and for something that appeared so briefly in the Rutles documentary, the backstory was so extensive. That alone makes us seriously consider them.

The Bullet Points:
Movie Appeared:
All You Need is Cash (1978)

Actors:
Eric Idle (Dirk McQuickly, Bass, Lead Vocals)
Bianca Jagger (Martini McQuickley, Keyboards)
(Denny Gilmour, Guitar and Backing Vocals)
(Joey Mason, Drums)

Songs you might remember:
Listen to the Noise That the Small Girls Make While They Participate in Various Primitive Games For Their Own Amusement

Why you should vote for them:
Based on the fictional Discography, they helped invent Punk as “White Doped on Punk” was released in 1970.

Why you should not vote for them:
Their “ultimate” album, Comatose, was only ten minutes long.
