In the seemingly never ending animated show, The Simpsons, some people may have forgotten that the character of Bart Simpson actually had two top 100 hits in the United States. “Do the Bartman” from the album, “The Simpsons Sing the Blues” actually reached #11 in 1990. On the show, Bart showed proficiency with the drums, was in a boy band, but also had a hit in Springfield with “I Didn’t Do It” when he was a featured player on the Krusty the Clown show. With success in the real world and the fake world, does this not make Bart Simpson a legitimate candidate for the Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: The Simpsons (1988-) Actors: Nancy Cartwright Songs you might remember: Do the Bartman Deep Deep Trouble I Didn’t Do It Why you should vote for him: He actually did have a mainstream hit. Why you should not vote for him: Musically speaking, it was not that good. {youtube}

As one half of the “musical moron twins”, Barry (Jack Black) took musical elitism to a new level. He worked at Championship Vinyl, and if you were to try to purchase the wrong record in his presence, you best beware! Barry finally gets his band going when finally someone answers his flyer in the store and is slated to open for the Kinky Wizards at an event run by his boss (John Cusack). It appeared that we would never see Black’s band play as despite the efforts of Cusack to stop it. Initially billed as the Sonic Death Monkey, though on the “verge of becoming Kathleen Turner Overdrive”, Black introduced his group as “Barry Jive and the Uptown Five” and shocked everyone with a wonderful performance of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it on”. We do wonder aloud if Barry would have a top five for who should get into the Fictitious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! (…and how many times Jack Black would be in it!) The Bullet Points: Movies Appeared: High Fidelity (2000) Actors: Jack Black (Barry) And……????? Songs you might remember: Let’s Get it On Why you should vote for them: Jack Black nailed the role. Why you should not vote for them: One soulful cover, does not a band make. {youtube}

Does every heroic a cappella singing group need a foil? If the early 2010’s have taught us anything, the answer is yes. The all male Barden Treblemakers were not just talented, but were a bit cocky; making them that much easier to dislike, though you could not help but respect them. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Pitch Perfect (2012) Actors: Skylar Astin (Jesse) Adam Devine (Bumper) Utkarsh Ambudkar (Donald) Ben Platt (Benji) Songs you might remember: Let it Whip Right Round Why you should vote for them: There was no denying the vocal talent on display here. Why you should not vote for them: Is a cappella really a form of music that should be celebrated here? {youtube}

In the very successful musical comedy, Pitch Perfect, we witnessed the all-girl a cappella singing group from Barden University compete for singing excellence. The movie was not just successful because the actors could really sing, but the ensemble cast was comprised of many talented women who had a solid script to work with. It actually was not a big surprise that this was successful and that a sequel is planned. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Pitch Perfect (2012) Actors: Anna Kendrick (Beca) Anna Camp (Aubrey) Brittany Snow (Chloe) Rebel Wilson (Fat Amy) Ester Dean (Cynthia) Alexis Knapp (Stacy) Hana Mae Lee (Lilly) Songs you might remember: Cups Just the Way you Are/Just A Dream Price Tag/Don’t You Forget About Me/Give Me Everything Why you should vote for them: Not only were they talented at singing, but they entertained us while doing it. Why you should not vote for them: Is a cappella really a form of music that should be celebrated here? {youtube}
