RIP: Darryl Dawkins

One of the best dunkers ever is no more.
Former fourteen-year NBA veteran, Darryl Dawkins passed away yesterday at the age of 58 from a heart attack. Dawkins, a Center, was known for his powerful dunks that shattered glass twice in the 1979 season. The Pennsylvania native spent the majority of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers and is currently fourteenth all-time in True Shooting Percentage and seventh in Field Goal Percentage. Dawkins was a very popular figure on very good Sixers teams. While he was never an All Star, Dawkins had a 12.0 Points per Game average and a 15.8 PER.
While he is not a Hall of Famer, he was a colorful and memorable player and this is a loss to the basketball community.

Osi Umenyiora Retires

Perhaps it did not get the attention it should have but former New York Giant and two-time Super Bowl Champion, Osi Umenyiora retired this week.
Umenyiora, a former second round draft choice out of Troy, would shine the brightest when the pressure was on and Umenyiora would make two Pro Bowl Teams along with a pair of All Pro Selections. The Linebacker would record 85 Quarterback Sacks, including three seasons where he recorded two digit Sack campaigns.
The Nigerian born player was a major force in the G-Men’s last Super Bowl win and while he is unlikely to be honored by Canton, it is very possible that the Giants will honor him in some capacity now that his playing career is over.

The Hockey Hall of Fame works a little faster than other North American sports hall doesn’t it?
With only a three year waiting period after retirement from the game (playing in Europe still counts as being active), we have decided some time ago that active players over the age of thirty-five would be profiled and made available for your vote.
Rather than only mention the new entries, we are listing all of the “TBD” players who are currently in that section.
The players listed are as follows:
Alex Tanguay, a member of the 2001 Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche and an All Star in 2004.
Andrei Markov, a two time All Star and member of the 2011 Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Champions.
Brad Richards, a key member of the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup winners and past winner of the Conn Smythe and Lady Byng Trophies.
Brian Campbell, a member of Chicago’s 2010 Stanley Cup Champs and was once a Second Team All Star and Lady Byng winner.
Dan Boyle, a two time All Star Defenceman and member of the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup Champions.
Eric Brewer, a traditional Defenceman who won Olympic and World Cup Gold with Canada.
Jarome Iginla, a former Art Ross Trophy Winner, two time Goal Scoring Champion, two time Olympic Gold Medalist and three time First Team All Star.

Steve Nash joins the Suns Ring of Honor

The Phoenix Suns announced that Steve Nash will become the 14th man to enter their Ring of Honor. That will take place at halftime of this season’s home game with the Portland Trail Blazers on October 30th.
The Canadian raised Point Guard had his best seasons with Phoenix where he would become a two time MVP winner and earned six of his eight All Star Appearances. He is currently the franchise’s leader in Assists, Three Pointers and Free Throw Percentage and as a Sun he had an average of 14.5 Points and 9.4 Assist per Game along with a PER of 20.8.
The future Hall of Famer will join a Ring that includes Charles Barkley, Tom Chambers and Dan Majarle.
