gold star for USAHOF

45. Bill Cartwright

45. Bill Cartwright

Bill Cartwright was an All-Star as a rookie for the New York Knicks in 1980, and that would be the only time he played in the mid-season classic.  The Center was with the Knicks until 1988 when he was traded to the Bulls, which would bring him his greatest team success in basketball.

The Bulls gave up Power Forward, Charles Oakley (Horace Grant was ready to take over) to get Cartwright, feeling like they needed an upgrade in the Center position.  With Jordan and Pippen in tow, Cartwright did not have to handle the rock nearly as much as he did in New York, so his role was much different. Cartwright was still able to score over ten Points per Game in his first two years before his totals gradually dropped to 5.6 in his last year as a Bull, 1993-94.

Cartwright might have played less, but he knew what he was there to do, which was keep other opposing Centers in check while protecting Jordan.  The Bulls liked what he offered, and he was the starter on three consecutive NBA Championships (1991-93).

If Cartwright's rank looks low, a player with a negative -3.8 VORP for a team can only be ranked so high.
