Prior to winning the World Series MVP in 1972, you could argue that Gene Tenace was one of its most unlikely recipients.  The Catcher made his first appearance in the Majors in 1969 for Oakland, but he was mostly a backup.  Late in the ’72 season, Tenace was promoted to a starter, and he belted four Home Runs in World Series.

After those heroics, Tenace was one of the best hitting Catchers, showing power with five 20-Home Run years.  Tenace did not have a good batting average (.241 lifetime), but he had excellent plate discipline leading his league in Walks twice, and having a career OBP of .388.  Also playing for San Diego, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh, Tenace was only an All-Star once, but his high OBP and post-season accolades make him one of the better Catchers of his day.
