1976 again? As the United States was days away from celebrating its bicentennial, a song about a nooner was about to pollute the top of the pop charts. In a year where the Ramones released their first album and Punk was about to shatter the musical landscape; AM radio seemed oblivious to the changes surrounding it. One of the stars of the weaker AM dial was the Starland Vocal Band, who gave us the soft rock crapfest, Afternoon Delight.
With their sappy vocals and ode to beautiful lovemaking (all done in lame double entendres), “Skyrockets in flight” was playing on the transistors radios everywhere. Like other soft rock scrubs, they were given a chance at a variety show which thankfully only lasted six weeks. In further proof that the Grammys mean very little, they won the award for Best New Artist. Why they didn’t have to give it back like Milli Vanilli did is anyone’s guess.
