In the awful film, Uptown Girls, the main character (the late Brittany Murphy) falls for Neal Fox who is a singer who becomes successful after he dumps her. Actually, we should have dumped this movie before we got halfway through.

From the underappreciated concept album (The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands) by the Turtles we have an album where different “bands” appeared. This allowed the group to not only stretch their skills musically, as each “band” had a completely different sound and also showcase their humor. As “Nature’s Children”, the Turtles performed “You Showed Me”, which was a very good Pop song, and arguably the most memorable of the album (though it was not the biggest hit). Still, we wish the band name they chose for this song was as clever as some of the others they went with. The Bullet Points: Album Appeared: The Turtles present the Battle of the Bands (1968) Actors/Performers: The Turtles Songs you might remember: You Showed Me Why you should vote for them: This lone song from Nature’s Children was a hit. That gives it something that 95 percent of the others on the ballot do not have. Why you should not vote for them: We aren’t sure ourselves if the Turtles billing themselves under another name for one song only should even count. {youtube}

From the early 80’s cult film, “Get Crazy” we have a series of bands who played at the fictitious Saturn Theatre (modeled after the famous Filmore East) for their 15th New Year’s Eve Show. Nada was one of the main acts, and the fifteen people in her back up band literally ran the spectrum of every alternative musical genre you could think that was associated with this time period. Her act was supported by Piggy, who was a hardcore Punk act (played by Fear’s Lee Ving, who were themselves about as hardcore it got at the time) and we saw one of the first instances on screen of stage diving. Their set was one of the more memorable parts of the movie, which could be worth something if this film has a larger audience than we think. The Bullet Points: Movie Appeared: Get Crazy (1983) Actors: Nada (Lori Eastwood) Piggy (Lee Ving) Songs you might remember: I’m Not Going to Take it No More Why you should vote for them: They had a memorable set, and Piggy was a larger than life character. Why you should not vote for them: This film had such a limited audience; it is hard to imagine that a lot of people even knew this film existed. {youtube}

From the MTV animated series, Daria, we have the alternative rock band Mystik Spiral. The band made a brief appearance in one episode but proved popular enough to make regular appearances throughout the series. They don’t come across as a success, though they constantly seem to get gigs, had their own website and even a fan club. The question here is how popular Daria is with those who visit here. The Bullet Points: TV Show Appeared: Daria (1997-2001) Actors: Alvaro J. Gonzalez (Trent Lane, Lead Vocals) Unknown Voice (Jesse Moreno, Lead Guitar) Unknown Voice (Max Tyler, Drums) Unknown Voice (Nicholas Campbell, Bass) Songs you might remember: Behind My Eyelids Freakin Friends Why you should vote for them: This fictitious band has a fictitious fan club. Why you should not vote for them: Daria was a hit on MTV, but is it even remembered that much today? {youtube}
