gold star for USAHOF

1958 SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Thank you for all of your participation in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project. If you are unaware of what that is, we acted as if the PFHOF had its first class in January 1946.

We have completed the years up to 1959.

For “1958,” a Preliminary Vote with over 130 players whose playing career ended by 1952. We are also following the structure in that players have 20 years of eligibility, and if they do not make it into the Hall, they are relegated to the Senior Pool.

Each voter was asked to select 25 names from the preliminary list, and the top 25 vote-getters were named Semi-Finalists.

A week later, the voters were asked to pick 15 names from the 25 Semi-Finalists, and next week, they will pick five from the remaining 15. We will continue this process weekly until we catch up to the current year.

30 Votes took place, with the top five advancing.

Next Saturday, we will post the Class of the 1959 Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project.

Thank you to all who contributed. If you want to be part of this project, please let us know!

1959 PRELIMINARY RESULTS:

Thank you to all of you who have participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project. If you are unaware of what that is, we acted as if the PFHOF had its first class in January 1946.

We have completed the first 14 years thus far.

For “1958,” a Preliminary Vote with close to 130 players whose playing career ended by 1952. We are also following the structure in that players have 20 years of eligibility, and if they do not make it into the Hall, they are relegated to the Senior Pool.

Each voter was asked to select 25 names from the preliminary list, and the top 25 vote-getters were named Semi-Finalists.

A week later, the voters will be asked to pick 15 names from the 25 Semi-Finalists, and next after, they will pick five from the remaining 15. We will continue this process weekly until we catch up to the current year.

Please note that a significant change occurred “years ago”, allowing voters to submit less than the allotted spots.

We will post the 1958 Finalists of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project results next Saturday.

Thank you to all who contributed. If you want to be part of this project, please let us know!

1958 Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project Class.

Here we are!  Again!!

If you have been following our Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project, you know that we have asked the rhetorical question: What if the PFHOF began in January 1946?

After soliciting and obtaining a passionate group of football fans and historians, we sent out a ballot for a Preliminary Vote, in which we asked each voter to give us 25 names as their semi-finalists and 5 in the Senior Pool. Following that, we asked the group to vote for their 15 Finalists in the Modern Era and 3 in the Senior Category. The final stage was to vote for their five Modern Era inductee and one Senior inductee.

This is the result of the thirteenth official class;

Below are the final results of this project based on 30 votes,

Remember that the group took a vote, and we have reverted back to the top five candidates entering the Hall.  This will be put to a vote again in “1960”.

About the 1958 Inductees:

Sammy Baugh QB-TB, WAS 1937-52: Inducted in 1958 on his 1st Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

In 1937, The Boston Redskins relocated to Washington, and that year's First Round Pick was Sammy Baugh. Baugh was initially listed as a Tailback, but passing was not the norm. But he became one of the first accurate passers and the prototype for the modern Quarterback. He won two NFL Championships for Washington (1937 and 1942), and he led the NFL in Pass Completion Percentage eight times, Passing Yards four times, Touchdown Passes twice and Passer Rating three times.

Baugh was not just a Quarterback; he was also an excellent Punter. Before he was exclusively playing offence, he netted 31 interceptions on the defensive side of the ball. In the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Baugh may not be the best Quarterback, but historically speaking, he is considered the most important.

Bulldog Turner C-T-LB-G, CHI 1940-52: Inducted in 1958 on his 1st Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966.

Clyde “Bulldog” Turner lived up to his nickname, playing at Center and Linebacker in a ferocious and skilled fashion.

Turner was a First-Round Pick in 1940 and played his entire career in Chicago. He was one of the best blockers in the decade, and his freak athleticism matched anyone on the field.  Turner proved to be the lynchpin to four NFL Championships and was also the league leader in Interceptions (8) in 1942.

Bob Waterfield QB-K-P, RAM 1945-52: Inducted in 1958 on his 1st r Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

Bob Waterfield had one of the most remarkable rookie seasons as a quarterback in NFL history. He graduated from UCLA and led the league in touchdown passes (14), was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP), and took the Cleveland Rams to an NFL Championship by defeating Sammy Baugh and the Washington Redskins.

After the Rams relocated to Los Angeles, Waterfield remained with the team until he retired in 1952. He was a three-time First Team All-Pro and led the Rams to another NFL Championship in 1951. Additionally, he played defensive back during the first half of his professional career and was an exceptional kicker and punter in the pros.

Tony Canadeo HB-TB-FB-DB, GNB 1941-52: Inducted in 1958 on his 1st r Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

One of the most versatile players in Green Bay Packers history, Tony Canadeo did it all for the team.  As an NFL Champion in 1944, Canadeo became the third player in the NFL to rush for over 1,000 yards and the first Packer to do so.  He would play good defense, was their kick returner, and was occasionally used as a Quarterback.

Steve Owen T-G, KAN 1924-25, CLE 1925, NYG 1026-33: Inducted in 1958 on his 20th Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966 as a Coach.

Owen was inducted into the actual Hall of Fame as a Coach, but that section has been paused until 1963, and you elected him on his last “Modern” ballot as a player.  Named to the 1930’s All-Decade Team as a player, he was the captain of the team that won the 1927 NFL Championship, and in 1930 he became a player/coach.  Owen held that latter role until 1953, and won two more NFL Championships.

1958 SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Thank you for all of your participation in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project. If you are unaware of what that is, , we acted as if the PFHOF had its first class in January 1946.

We have completed the years up to 1957.

Next Saturday, we will be posting the results of the 1958 Semi-Finalists of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project.

Thank you to all who contributed. If you want to be part of this project, please let us know!

1957 Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project Class.

This is the result of the twelfth official class;

Below are the final results of this project based on 31 votes,

Remember that the group took a vote, and we have reverted back to the top five candidates entering the Hall.  This will be put to a vote again in “1960”.

About the 1957 Inductees:

Steve Van Buren HB, PHI 1944-51: Inducted in 1957 on his 1st Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

"Supersonic" Steve Van Buren was the first major star player for the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to his arrival as a first-round pick from LSU, the Eagles had only managed a fourth-place finish. However, Van Buren changed all of that. He played halfback for eight years in the NFL, all with the Eagles. Van Buren was a five-time first-team All-Pro, four-time rushing champion, and two-time leader in yards from scrimmage. He led Philadelphia to its first two NFL titles in 1948 and 1949 and paved the way for future backs.

Al Wistert T-G-DT, PHI 1943-51: Inducted in 1957 on his 1st Ballot. Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The man who opened up the lanes for Van Buren joins him as part of the PFHOF Revisited Project.  “The Big Ox” also played his entire career with the Eagles, where he also served as a captain and was named to four consecutive First Team All-Pros.  If Van Buren was the engine that drove Philadelphia to back-to-back titles, Wistert was the horsepower.

Beattie Feathers HB-WB, CHI 1934-37, BKN 1938-39 & GNB 1940: Inducted in 1957 on his 5h Senior Ballot.  Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Playing his college ball at the University of Tennessee, Beattie Feathers would have an incredible rookie season with the Chicago Bears, where in 1934, he would become the first 1,000 Yard rusher (though there are some football historians who dispute the accuracy), and he would also lead the league in All-Purpose Yards and Yards from Scrimmage and was a First Team All-Pro.  In the six seasons he played after (with Chicago, Brooklyn, and Green Bay), he didn't tally as much as he did as a rookie, but that campaign was the most incredible offensive year the league had ever seen.

Kenny Washington HB, RAM 1946-48: Inducted in 1957 on his 4th Ballot.  Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A superstar in both football and baseball at USC, Washington was unable to join the National Football League due to its segregationist policies, so he dominated for the Hollywood Bears in the Pacific Coast Professional Football League, where he was their best player.  When the Cleveland Rams relocated to Los Angeles, the time was right for reintegration, and he (along with Woody Strode) was signed by the Rams.  Washington’s knees were already banged up, and his tenure in the NFL was only three years, but his role in football should never be discounted.

Riley Matheson G, RAM 1939-42 & 1944-47, DET 1943, SFO 1948: Inducted in 1957 on his 4th Ballot.  Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Riley Matheson arrived in Cleveland with little fanfare to join the Rams in 1939 after going undrafted from Texas-El Paso.  Playing as both Offensive Lineman, Matheson broke out in 1942, earning his first First Team All-Pro, while also capturing that honor in 1944 and 1945.  Granted, this happened during World War II, when the league was depleted during World War II, but the NFL Champion in ’45 was out to prove he was there to stay.  The Rams relocated to Los Angeles, but he remained a First Team All-Pro, selected to his fourth and fifth one in 1946 and 1947.  He left the Rams to join the San Francisco 49ers of the then AAFC and finished off his career with two years in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders.

Swede Youngstrom G-T-E-C, BUF 1920-24, CAN 1921, CLE 1925, FRN 1926-27: Inducted in 1957 on his 4th Ballot.  Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

From the early days of football, Youngstrom was one of the most powerful guards of the 1920s, and he led the Frankford Yellow Jackets to an NFL Championship.  Youngstrom was also a three-time First Team All-Pro.

1957 SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Thank you for all of your participation in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project. If you are unaware of what that is, simply, we acted as if the PFHOF had its first class in January 1946.

We have completed the years up to 1956.

For “1957,” a Preliminary Vote with over 130 players whose playing career ended by 1951.

We also had a run-off vote to break a tie on Senior Candidate Parameters, in which you voted 18-12 to keep it as is. This means that for the next three years until another vote, the top vote-getter MUST gain 50% of the vote.

Next Saturday, we will be posting the Class of the 1957 Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project.

Modern Parameters

Top Five are inducted regardless of percentage

13

Keep as is with Top Five Advancing as long as they receive 50 percent

About the 1956 Inductees:

Sid Luckman QB-HB-DB, CHI 1939-50: Inducted in 1956 on his 1st Ballot.  Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965.

Sid Luckman was one of the game’s first great Quarterbacks, and would be the precursor for the era of “T” pivots.  Luckman played his entire 12-year career with the Chicago Bears and when teams saw that he did, they looked to develop their own version of the T-Attack.  Under the guidance of George Halas, Luckman took the Bears to four NFL Championships (1940, 1941, 1943 & 1946) and was named the MVP in 1943.  One of those championships was the 73-0 drubbing over Washington in 1940, which is the biggest margin in any NFL Championship or Super Bowl.  Luckman led the NFL in Passing Yards and Touchdown Passes three times.

Alex Wojciechowicz C-LB-E, DET 1938-46, PHI 1946-50: Inducted in 1956 on his 1st Ballot. Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.

Alex Wojciechowicz was a two-time All-American at Fordham, and was the lynchpin of the 1937 Rams team that only allowed 16 Points.  The Detroit Lions landed him with the sixth pick, and he continued to dominate at the pro level.  Playing Center on offense and Linebacker on defense, Wojciechowicz was a star on a struggling Lions squad, but a move to a more competitive Eagles team rejuvenated Wojciechowicz, who helped them win two NFL Championships (1948 & 1949).

George McAfee HB-DB, CHI 1940-41 & 1945-46: Inducted in 1956 on his 1st Ballot. Inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966.

Despite the fact that George McAfee was taken with the second overall pick in the 1940 Draft, there was some trepidation from George Halas and the Chicago Bears management towards the Back.  They need not have worried.  McAfee played all eight of his seasons in the National Football League with the Bears and the multi-talented Back would be named to the 1940s All-Decade Team.  Considered to be one of the top Chicago Bears of all-time, McAfee helped take the team to three NFL Championships.

1956 SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Thank you for all of you who have participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project, and if you are unaware of what that is, simply, we acted as if the PFHOF had their first class in January of 1946?

We have completed the years up to 1955.

For “1956” a Preliminary Vote with over 130 players whose playing career ended by 1949. We are also following the structure in that players have 20 years of eligibility, and if they do not make it into the Hall, they are relegated to the Senior Pool.

Each voter was asked to select 25 names from the preliminary list, with the top 25 vote getters named as Semi-Finalists.

A week later, the voters were asked to pick 15 names from the 25 Semi-Finalists, and next week, they will pick five from the remaining 15. We will continue this process weekly until we catch up to the current year.

31 Votes took place, with the top five advancing.

Next Saturday, we will be posting the results of the 1954 Semi-Finalists of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project.

Thank you to all who contributed, and if you want to be a part of this project, please let us know!

1955 Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project Class.

Here we are!  Again!!

If you have been following our Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project, you know that we have asked the rhetorical question…what if the PFHOF began in January of 1946?

After soliciting and obtaining a passionate group of football fans and historians, we sent out a ballot for a Preliminary Vote, which we asked each voter to give us 25 names as their semi-finalists, and 5 in the Senior Pool. Following that, we asked the group to vote for their 15 Finalists in the Modern Era, and 3 in the Senior Category. The final stage was to vote for their five Modern Era inductee, one Senior inductee and one Coaches/Contributor inductee.

This is the result of the tenth official class;

Below, are the final results of this project based on 30 votes, with a major change that we began “last year”:  ALL FINALISTS MUST obtain 50% of the VOTE!

About the 1955 Inductees:

Jim Benton E, RAM 1938-42 & 1944-47, CHI 1943: Inducted in 1955 on his 3rd Ballot.  Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Selected in the 2nd Round out of the University of Arkansas in 1938, Jim Benton would go onto be one of the first great receivers in the history of the Rams franchise.  Benton led the NFL in Yards per Reception as a rookie and was named to the Pro Bowl in his second season.  He took 1941 off and returned to the NFL in 1942, and due to a heart murmur, he was not permitted to enlist in the U.S. Military for World War II.  He was loaned to the Chicago Bears in 1943 as the Rams were unable to field a team due to a depletion of talent but returned in 1944 and 1945 and 1946 but together two excellent seasons where he was the NFL leader in Receiving Yards.  1945 was a uniquely special season for Benton.  Not only would it be a large part of the Rams 1945 NFL Championship, his league-leading 1,067 Receiving Yards was accomplished in only nine games.  He also would become the first Wide Receiver to exceed 300 Yards in a Game, a mark that was duplicated for another 40 Years!  At the time of his retirement, he was second all-time in Receiving Yards, and he was chosen for the 1940’s All-Decade Team.

Cecil Isbell TB-HB, GNB 1938-42: Inducted in 1955 on his 8th Ballot. Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Usually, when you speak of a five-year career in any sport, you can't be talking about a great player.  Not very many people had a five-year run like Cecil Isbell.  Isbell was the 7th Overall Draft Pick by Green Bay in 1938, and as a rookie, he joined Arnie Herber in the Packers backfield.  Isbell was rushing more in the first two years, and back in those days, Tailbacks were often passing and rushing with similar frequency.  He would subsequently the Packers win the 1939 NFL Championship.  Isbell would take more of a passing role, and in 1941 and 1942, he would lead the NFL in Passing Yards and Passing Touchdowns, the last year seeing him be the first passer to throw for 2,000 Yards.  He would set the since broken record with 23 straight games with a Touchdown Pass.  He would retire after the 1942 season, though not due to injury but due to beginning a coaching career.

1955 SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Thank you for all of you who have participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project, and if you are unaware of what that is, simply, we acted as if the PFHOF had their first class in January of 1946?

We have completed the years up to 1954.

For “1955” a Preliminary Vote with over 130 players whose playing career ended by 1949.

1955 PRELIMINARY RESULTS:

Thank you for all of you who have participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project, and if you are unaware of what that is, simply, we acted as if the PFHOF had their first class in January of 1946?

Please note that a significant change took place, allowing for voters to submit less than the allotted spots.  A glitch did not allow for that to occur in Coaches/Contributors.  That will be rectified in the future.

About the 1955 Inductees:

Bruiser Kinard T, BKN 1938-44, NYY 1946-47: Inducted in 1954 on his 2nd Ballot.  Was inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971.

A two-time All-American at Mississippi, Frank “Bruiser” Kinard, lived up to his nickname in both college and the pro ranks.  Kinard played for Brooklyn in the NFL where the hyper-aggressive Tackle consistently inflicted damage to his opponents without getting injured himself.  Praised in football for his speed and blocking abilities, he earned three First Team All-Pros with the Dodgers/Tigers, and he made history when he joined the New York Yankees of the AAFC in 1946, and became the first player to earn First Team All-Pro honors in both leagues.

Ace Parker TB-DB-QB, BKN 1937-41, BOS 1945, NYY 1946: Inducted in 1954 on his 3rd Ballot. Was inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972.

Clarence “Ace” Parker was one of the most versatile players ever to compete on the gridiron, especially on the offensive side of the ball.  Parker was a triple-threat, who could pass, rush and kick, all at an elite level, and was instrumental in what good seasons that the now defunct Brooklyn Dodgers had.  A two-time First Team All-Pro, Parker also could excel at defense, as shown in 1940 when he led the NFL in Interceptions.  Parker missed a lot of

time due to World War II, but came back to play two years in the AAFC.

Red Badgro E-DE, NYG 1936-43: Inducted in 1954 on his 13th Ballot (really his 9th ballot).  Was inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

At the University of Southern California, Red Badrgo did it all.  He was a star athlete in baseball, basketball, and football and was an elite performer in all of them.  Following his career as a Trojan, Badgro played for the New York Yankees of the NFL.  When the Yankees folded during the 1928 season, Badgro turned his attention to baseball, but he abandoned that to return to the gridiron in 1930 for the New York Giants.  Badgro was with the Giants for six seasons, where he was considered one of the best offensive blockers and an upper-end tackler on defense.  Badgro would assist in New York’s 1934 Championship, and he was individually a two-time First Team All-Pro.  He also would lead the league in Receptions in 1933.

1954 SEMI-FINAL RESULTS:

Thank you for all of you who have participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project, and if you are unaware of what that is, simply, we acted as if the PFHOF had their first class in January of 1946?

We have completed the years up to 1953.

For “1954” a Preliminary Vote with over 130 players whose playing career ended by 1948.

30 Votes took place, with the top five advancing.

Please note that a significant change took place, allowing for voters to submit less than the allotted spots.  A glitch did not allow for that to occur in Coaches/Contributors.  That will be rectified in the future.

Next Saturday, we will be posting the results of the 1954 Finalists of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project.

Thank you to all who contributed, and if you want to be a part of this project, please let us know!

1953 Pro Football Hall of Fame Revisited Project Class.

This is the result of the eighth official class;

Below, are the final results of this project based on 30 votes, with a major change:  ALL FINALISTS MUST obtain 50% of the VOTE!

About the 1953 Inductees:

Ken Strong FB-TB-HB-WB-DB-K, SIS 1928-32, NYG 1933-35, 1939 & 1944-47: Inducted in 1953 on his 7th Ballot.  Was inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967.

Listed mostly as a Halfback, Ken Strong could do everything as he excelled at every aspect of the game and could claim the title of the most complete player of his day.  Beginning his NFL career with the Staten Island Stapletons, Strong joined the New York Giants when the Staten Island folded in 1932.  Strong willed the Gants to the 1934 Championship, scoring 17 Points in their win over Chicago.  He missed some time in the NFL as he played for the New York Yanks of the short-lived AFL due to a salary dispute, but returned for another year in 1939.  Strong came back in 1944, where he was mostly used as a kicking specialist.  Overall, Strong was named an All-Pro four times.

Turk Edwards T, GNB 1930-40, BOS/WAS 1932-40: Inducted in 1953 on his 8th Ballot. Was inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969.

After becoming the first player in Washington State history to be named an All-American, Turk Edwards signed with the Boston Braves and joined them in their inaugural season in the National Football League.  Edwards was with the team as they changed their name to the Redskins and relocated to Washington, playing all nine of his pro years with the team.  A punishing two-way Tackle, Edwards was a three-time First Team All-Pro and a stud player who led the Redskins to their first league championship in 1937.  Following his retirement as a player in 1940, Edwards became an Assistant Coach for Washington winning a second NFL Championship in 1942.  Edwards later became their Head Coach in 1946 and held that role for three years.

Tuffy Leemans FB-TB-QB-DB, NYG 1936-43: Inducted in 1953 on his 5th Ballot.  Was inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978.

After a good college run at George Washington, the New York Giants drafted Tuffy Leemans in 1936, where he would have an eight-year career with the New York Giants.  Like many NFL players of the 30s and 40s, Leemans played multiple positions on both sides of the ball (FB, TB, DB, QB), and he was exceptional at all of them.  As a rookie, Leemans led the NFL in Rushing Yards (830), and he was second in that stat in 1938, the same season he led the Giants to an NFL Championship.  Leemans also helped New York reach the Championship Game in 1939 and 1941. Leemans, who was named to the 1930s All-Decade Team, was involved in more passing in the 1940s, finishing ninth in Passing Yards, each year from 1941 to 1943.  Defensively, he also recorded four Interceptions over his career.

Ralph Hay: Inducted in 1953 on the 4th Coaches/Contributor Ballot. Was never inducted into the actual Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In 1918, 27-year-old Ralph Hay bought the Canton Bulldogs, a member of a loose affiliation of teams that competed in the Ohio League. Canton was one of the better professional teams, but pro football, which was far behind college football in the national consciousness, needed a better organizational structure to move forward. This is where Hay came in.  Hay arranged a meeting with the Akron Pros, Cleveland Tigers, and Dayton Triangles managers to form the American Professional Football Conference. Four team does not a league make, and Hay, acting as the secretary, sent off letters to other football teams in the Midwest looking to form a league and request a meeting in Canton on September 17. Representatives from ten teams would be there, all in the automobile showroom of Hay's dealership. The American Professional Football Conference now had ten teams, and the league that would rename itself the National Football League two years later was born. Hay was asked by the owners to be the first president, but instead, he pushed (and got) Jim Thorpe as the first president, which he felt lent the new league credibility.

Canton won the league title in 1922, but Hay could not celebrate for long. The Bulldogs were not profitable, and Hay could not afford to keep the team. He sold the organization before the 1923 season, and Canton would win it all again, though Hay was no longer a part of it.  The Pro Football Hall of Fame would be awarded to Canton, and while Hay was not a part of that decision (he died 20 years before it opened), the vision that Hay had was bred in Canton, Ohio.
