The Rock and Roll Futures (257)

As we intend to make this website a constant work in process, we though it would be useful to discuss the future bands/artists who will become eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many of these artists are still recording and/or performing and thus adding to their impending legacy. They will be in our future lists so please feel free to vote so that we can rank them accordingly when they become eligible.
Arguably the England House Trio of Dirty Vegas was a “one and done” as their 2003 single, “Days Go By” generated attention.  That was about it, and unless something else changes, we can’t see anyone from Cleveland even breathing their name.
Essentially a one hit wonder, Dishwalla had a few albums in the late 90’s and early 00’s that sold moderately well. Music wise they a soulful Post Grunge sound that to some may have strayed a little far towards Adult Contemporary, but that did allow them to reach an audience that may not have been made available to them normally. Realistically, they only had one hit,…
A very popular band as evidenced by the fact that four of their albums debuted at number one, Disturbed became one of the most popular Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands in their time. Ironically many Metal fans have dismissed the band as not “hard” enough, but as they found a very large amount of fans, clearly they have a formula that works for them. The Bullet Points:Eligible…
A popular Celtic Punk band from Boston, the Dropkick Murphys certainly found a place for themselves in the musical canon. With a solid live show and unique music, the Massachusetts band made people take notice, but realistically speaking, if any Celtic Punk band gets into the Hall, shouldn’t it be the Pogues?
It has been speculated that the premature death of lead singer Dave “Stage” Williams derailed the momentum that Drowning Pool and there is some validity to that as the band, which was pegged by some as the next big thing in Nu-Metal faded into an outfit that blended into the crowd.  They had some good early success, but is that enough to propel tem into the…
Best known for the Adult Contemporary hit, Barely Breathing, Duncan Sheik seemed set up for a decent run on the musical charts. He appeared to have just enough Crossover Alternative people and throwback appeal to acquire the Singer/Songwriter set, but he never was able to duplicate his success again and he faded away like so many others.
Basically the constant project of Mark Oliver Everett (and whomever he is playing with at the time), Eels are one of those many acts that will always gain musical praise from critics, though continue to struggle to sell a lot of units. This is one of the better Alternative Rock acts of the past twenty years, but with only one modest hit and a discography (while…
A Brit Pop band that was more of a Progressive Rock throwback, Elbow continues to be a player on the U.K. music scene. The band never had problem acknowledging their influences (Genesis and Radiohead are the ones most commonly mentioned), but at what point are bands citing Elbow as an influence? Unless that happens, this is not a band that can be Hall of Fame bound.
At present, it would be hard pressed to find a Spanish singer who has more success than Enrique Iglesias.  In fact, you may have to back to his famous father Julio Iglesias, to find anyone who has done as well with the Spanish speaking market than Enrique.  As you can figure, the bulk of his success has been in Spanish, but this is not to say…
Blending Pop, Rock and a Gothic look, Evanescence took the musical world by storm in 2003. There was nowhere you could go where you would not hear their monster smash, “Bring Me to Life”. The band was pegged by some as future long term superstars, but as of this writing that has not happened. They may still be able to churn out more hits as they…
With a rare combination of tough and sexy, Eve was an instant Rap superstar and became one of the top East Coast rappers of the early 00’s. As of late, she has focused far more on her acting career than her MC work, and it could be stated that if she kept up with her music as opposed to looking for film work it is possible…
Although she is very much in the large shadow of her deceased husband, the Notorious B.I.G. (no pun intended), Faith Evans was an accomplished artist in her own right.  From her beginnings as a session singer, Evans was always writing songs.  When she finally received the chance to sing her material, it proved to be among the better R&B efforts of the time.  Faith Evans has…
Pop-Punk.  Emo.  Post-Hardcore.  Like most American bands, there are multiple labels that you can slap on Fall Out Boy, and while this is a band that has numerous detractors, the Pete Wnetz led group also has to be called very successful.
A lot was expected out of the Texas band, Fastball after their monster smash, “The Way” dominated the radio with a near perfect blend of Alternative and Pop. The end result was a perceived one hit wonder, with a strong emphasis on the word wonder, as this was a band that really should have been able to capitalize on the success and sound they had.
As the Electronic genre continues to grow, it is almost expected to find that the bulk of the music emerges from Europe.  In Austria, we find Christian Fennesz who although is appropriately categorized as an Electronic artist, Fennesz creates a large part of his music with a six string guitar.  Fennesz is often cited as an artist whose music is amongst the most richly textured and…
In the mid 90’s, Filter was able to capitalize on the still prevalent Alternative boom with a debut album that featured Industrial and Alternative influences.  Filter was than able to carve out a decent career with albums and multiple Soundtrack singles that kept them in Alternative scene’s eye.  Although they did achieve some success, they did not do so as a leader of the genre and…
Wisely changing their name from the Rainbow Butt Monkeys, Finger Eleven was for a long time one of the best kept secrets in Canadian Hard Rock.  As they continued to evolve and incorporate more varied elements into their work, Finger Eleven not only escaped the Underground in Canada, they were able to get noticed in the United States.  With their last album gaining them attention, it…
The stage name of John Ondrasik, Five For Fighting features Adult Contemporary sounding piano based American Rock and Roll. Ondrasik achieved some success mostly from his hit, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” and is primarily known for that song alone. Overall, he is a good performer, but you can’t be known for only one song and expect to cruise into Cleveland.
While there should not be a lot of doubt that the New Zealand group, Flight of the Conchords were hysterical and ushered a lot of laughs on HBO, is there not equal perception that this is not a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act?  We will let you tell us if there is more to their story.
A very intriguing Rap/Rock hybrid from Denver, Flobots pushed the Progressive Rap boundaries with a political stance and a dual MC attack.  They managed to have a minor Modern Rock Hit in 2008 with Handlebars, but that might have been the apex of what they were able to accomplish.
