98. Cher

We don’t actually have that much of a problem with the song itself.  The legendary Cher scored a massive hit with the Dance song and proved that her drawing power is as eternal as the plastic she is made from.  The song is ok for what it was.  So why is it we have a problem with it?  One word: Autotune.

The eight letter word (made of two four letter words) is the death of modern music today.  Nothing rips the soul out of music faster, and nothing has made more talentless hacks into stars than it.  In Cher’s “Believe”, Autotune is all over Cher’s vocals, despite the star not really needing the enhancement.  This may not have been the first hit to use it, but producers took notice and the autotune would slowly pop up everywhere.  Indirectly, you could say thanks to this song we want to pull a “Sonny Bono” and ski into a tree too.
