Respect Yourself
Highest Billboard Position:
#5 in 1987

Many people forget that before Die Hard made him a bankable movie star, Bruce Willis was a successful television actor who ushered in a different kind of cool on the quirky hit, Moonlighting.  His breakout television role propelled him to try movies and music and though the former turned out to be successful, the latter is best forgotten.

With an album entitled “The Return of Bruno”, Willis tried to parlay his cool into modern blues music.  The problem was even though Willis was an obvious fan of the musical style; it didn’t mean that he had the ability to perform it.  His renditions were watered down and studio aided and lacked the soul that he desperately wanted to convey.  A single from the album, Respect Yourself was a weak cover of the Staple Singers hit from the early 70’s, and left the listener with the question of whether or not “Bruno” respected the musical genre he so obviously loved.  The “Return of Bruno”?  Bruno should have stayed away.
