Midnight at the Oasis
Highest Billboard Position:
#6 in 1974

We have been to the desert (and not on the horse with no name) and we can assure you that the feeling of romance is not something you associate with that region.  We will wager that Maria Muldaur has never been there and just went by what she heard about in reference to the old silent movies set in that area.

Maria Muldaur’s, “Midnight at the Oasi”s was intended to be a sensual song about having an intimate moment in the backdrop of a desert oasis.  Muldaur offers to be a “belly dancer” to her “sheik” as long as the camels are put to bed.  Here’s the thing; camels are disgusting, smelly creatures, usually ridden by even smellier men.  Quoting Anakin Skywalker, “sand gets everywhere” and it is not something to roll around in.  Oh, and for being a woman anywhere near the oasis…..well maybe Muldaur hasn’t noticed but the Middle East’s track record for gender equality is not exactly the best.  This song stinks as bad as those camels.
