You would think that a song that hits number one must be truly special. It is surprising how many tunes that hit that Billboard peak fail to remain relevant or even in the public consciousness. There is no other song that illustrates that point better than Debby Boone whose lone hit, “You Light Up My Life” went number one for what was then a record ten weeks. In fact, this was the biggest hit of the 1970’s. This is fairly shocking that you can’t come across this on any radio station these days regardless of the format.
It is difficult to figure out just how this happened. Debby Boone could sing, but not brilliantly. She wasn’t hot; rather she was just a Plain Jane with a famous father. This could be the most vanilla song that ever hit number one, or maybe ever produced. The song was a testament to God, although it was often misunderstood and many assumed she was singing to some guy. Ahhhh…..now we figured it out. So this became a hit and favorite of average looking women, with average hopes and average dreams hoping to love any average guy. Now considering, that most people are essentially average (hence the term), this likely struck a chord with future hausfraus across the country. With that said, vanilla may taste good for a bit, but you never crave it. It goes away with a whimper, just like the biggest song of the 70’s did.
