The Morning After
Highest Billboard Position:
#1 in 1973

There is something about disaster movies that we (and a lot of people love).  Although, we were not a fan of the remake, the Poseidon Adventure was one of our favorite films of the genre from the 1970’s.  Sure, there were a few cheesy moments and overacting from Shelley Winters and Ernest Borgnine, but it was an enjoyable film regardless.  The thing though with disaster movies, is the incessant need to shove in a love song that never seems to belong.  It’s even worse when the song is especially mush and full of crap.

“The Morning After” was featured in the movie prior to the ship flipping over and off the strength of the film’s performance the song was released.  Maureen McGovern, who was chosen to sing the aforementioned song, was certainly a capable singer and Broadway trained, but had no business being anywhere near a Top 40.  The song is so drippy that you want to cheer for McGovern to go down with the ship and take the swimming sacrifice that Shelley Winters did.  There’s got to be a morning after?  Not if that is what is playing on the radio.
