Louis Wright was taken 17th overall in the 1975 NFL Draft out of San Jose State, and the gifted cornerback stepped straight into Denver's starting lineup and instantly elevated the standard for perimeter defense. Standing 6-foot-1 with track-star speed, Wright brought a rare combination of length, fluidity, and physical press coverage that allowed defensive coordinator Joe Collier to unleash the legendary "Orange Crush" defense.

Wright quickly established himself as one of the premier shutdown corners in professional football, anchoring the secondary during Denver's magical 1977 run to Super Bowl XII. Between 1977 and 1985, he reeled off five Pro Bowl selections and earned First-Team All-Pro honors twice (1977 and 1978), accompanied by a Second-Team nod in 1979. Opposing quarterbacks routinely avoided his side of the field entirely, yet Wright still found ways to generate game-altering plays, returning two interceptions for touchdowns in 1977 alone as the defense surrendered just 10.6 points per game.

During his late-1970s peak, Wright was widely viewed alongside Mike Haynes and Mel Blount as the absolute gold standard for boundary cornerbacks. His length and smooth hips made him a true prototype, capable of erasing an opponent's top wideout on an island without requiring safety help over the top. He was equally lethal in run support, using his size to shed perimeter blocks and blow up sweeps in the backfield, earning a spot on the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team.

Wright remained a defensive cornerstone as the franchise transitioned into the Dan Reeves and John Elway era in the 1980s. He earned further Pro Bowl selections in 1983 and 1985, showing remarkable longevity and route recognition as he aged. His veteran presence proved vital during Denver's 1986 championship run, where he logged five interceptions during the regular season and helped lead the Broncos back to the big stage in Super Bowl XXI.

Across 12 seasons spent entirely in Denver (1975–1986), Wright appeared in 166 regular-season games, accumulating 26 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries, returning two for touchdowns. The Broncos enshrined Wright into the Ring of Fame in 1993.
