When Desolation Boulevard came out it stayed on my turntable in regular rotation for years. The crazy part was that except for fake performances where they had to lip-sync for tv shows you never really saw them on TV in the US. I recently watched the fulll Musikladen show and was shocked at how GREAT the band was live. All 4 sing and play their butts off and are having a blast doing it. Andy on guitar and Mick on drums could play with, or outplay, anyone. They have a ton of hits and a ton of other songs that are great. I know their bubblegum (Chin/Chapma n) songs are hurting them with the HoF, but they could destroy so many "pop" hit bands in the Hall like Bon Jovi or Foriegner. The cumulative sum of all those hits, other great songs, amazing musicianship and showmanship, these Glam and Hard Rock progenitors were the inspiration for many bands and some are quoted right on the Sweet's website. These guys were ahead of their time and their music definitely holds up. I hope they get in.

It would be a travesty of justice to not include Sweet in the hall of fame. They are THE BEST glam/hard rock band that never got true recognition. If you look beyond the bubblegum pop (though 'Funny Funny' is a really catchy number)the other stuff they did are a real eye-opener. For example, in 'Fox on the Run' the prog rock intro and interludes are genius; the 'Musikladen' compilation of songs have a distinctive hard rockiness to them and the lyrics in 'Teenage Rampage' are pertinent to all teens even today. It is debatable whether some of their musical riffs were their own or 'stolen' from others but what can't be denied is that the Sweet were at the forefront of the glam/hard rock movement of the 70's and therefore should be credited as such. I was an ardent fan since 1971 when at the tender age of 8 I fell for the whole band. I had posters of them everywhere. I was too young to go to their gigs then but I listen to them every day and am going to see the current line up soon.
