Bernard King was drafted 7th Overall in 1977, and the former Tennessee Volunteer had one of the best rookie seasons in franchise history, averaging 24.2 Points per Game and finishing 10th overall. King would finish second to Walter Davis in Rookie of the Year honors. He would play one more year in New Jersey, where he averaged 21.6 Points per Game.
While King was undoubtedly more than capable and on the rise, the organization felt that his off-court issues made him expendable and jettisoned him to the Utah Jazz. King would later be named to four All-Star Games.
He would be brought back in his final season (1992/93), but persistent knee problems would force him to retire shortly after.
King would be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.Traded to the Utah Jazz with John Gianelli and Jim Boylan for Rich Kelley 10/2/79.
